July 7..need some feedback

Recommended Posts

First time I have posted.. Today I received my date.. July 7, and it has suddenly become real... Would like some feedback from you all.. Those who have regrets and those who think it's the best decision they could have made.. I have been reading and researching. Most of all keeping up with everything on here.. I am excited and think this will be a great tool to become healthy and stay there... But there is that small small doubt ...

Welcome! I had my VSG surgery on 2/28/13 at the age of 53. It is the best decision I've ever made other than marrying my husband! Anxiety and doubt are normal emotions. This is a big deal, major surgery and major life style change. The main thing is to be confident that you have a great surgeon and surgical team with a good support group, hopefully a bariatric center of excellence. Second is to be as psychologically as ready as possible. That is one advantage of being older when having this surgery.

I'm only a month out but I'm still incredibly grateful to have chosen to have the VSG. No regrets honestly. But I certainly was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster it would put me on (mourning food, being sad about portion size, etc). I'm working through these things with the therapist I've been seeing for the past year, but I was just genuinely unprepared for all the food issues that would come up. Physically however, I'm feeling fabulous :)

Your new stomach's birthday is just a few days before mine! I went to sign consults on July 7, which was my real birthday. Dr. said we probably couldn't do surgery til August because he was booked for the next 2 weeks, then off for the 2 weeks after that. I panicked because I go back to school 8/1!!! That would push me back to Thanksgiving!! I started all the hoop jumping in October. Dr. said let me see what I can do. He came back and said how about Thursday....July 10th is the birthday of the new me!! But (thankfully, maybe?) I didn't have time for a proper food funeral. All I could think about is all the food I didn't get to say goodbye to :( .

Please keep me posted on things you find that are fabulous. I'm already burned out on broth!!

I'm 58 and decided after 28 years of being overweight and yo-yo diets, I needed to do something drastic. I was sleeved on 6/25 and figured my experience was going to be so slow due to my age. I have lost about 25 pounds since my pre-op visit on 6-20 and 30 since I began this journey. I feel good about my decision and am adjusting to my new lifestyle. Everyone is different but I'm not attempting to have the body of a 21 year old, I'll be happy to get within 25 lbs of my doctor's goal. The surgery was the easiest part so far, the planning and time spent finding new and interesting Proteins is the tougher part. But I think it's a great option for many people and I look forward to many healthy years ahead. Best of luck to you!!

Hi,

I'm 5 weeks tomorrow.

Had my surgery on June 23.

I too have battled the boredom & routine of the Protein type of allowable foods.

I attempted to return to my previous level of activity pretty much right away & ended up couched & in the ER dehydrated.

So my advice is don't rush recovery, keep sitting sipping and eating,& walking. It gets easier....i promise. Yes - it was worth it. I've lost 62# since mid May. Very happy with my progress & my decision!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
