Hi everyone! I'm new. I went to a seminar about the different options for surgery a year ago and let a few things scare me away. But now I'm realizing that this with some help from some supportive people and some therapy to help with my relationship with food, it is the way I want to go. I just turned 30, I just finished my masters degree. and I have a wopping BMI of 52. My condition is beginning to prevent me from living my life. And I of course am looking at (with the help of family) being a self pay. I was wondering what everyone spent on the surgery both here in the U.S and in Mexico. Give me an idea of what I'm looking at. Thanks so much.

Which surgery are you thinking about getting? I paid about 16.5k for my sleeve.

I was thinking of the band but from what I'm finding in my research I think the sleeve would be the best option for me.

Just a quick tip, you may want to post your question in the Mexico & Self-Pay forum for more responses:

I also found a couple of old threads that might be of interest (my apologies if you already found these):

Good luck!

I had the band and paid about 12k for that, but was completely miserable with it after the first 5 months, which is why I revised to the sleeve. 28k later, I'm finally happy!

My wife and I both had the sleeve. She's 26 and I'm 33 and we've each lost 35 lbs or so since day 1 of the pre-op diet to now (May 15th - June 22nd).

We paid $4,250 each, cash, at Ready4Achange in Tijuana, Mexico. Given an unlimited budget and our choice of doctors, we would probably go right back and do it again in Mexico. The nurses were nicer (and in my opinion super cute!) in mexico than anything I have experienced in the states. Not saying nurses aren't nice in the states, but these nurses really went above and beyond.

Besides the hospital/nurses, etc. the Ready4Achange group was just great, they picked us up, had us setup in the Marriott Tijuana for post-surgery (which is an absolutely beautiful hotel!) and just made sure we were perfectly taken care of. They do thousands of surgeries there (plastic + WLS) and everything felt really polished.

Our surgeon was Dr. Fernando Garcia. I haven't seen anyone on any forum have anything negative to say about him either.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
