Gardening!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all -

Just had a grand weekend planting another japanese wisteria... They are so beautiful when they bloom in late spring! I will be training it on an trellis in the front yard that sadly is bare...

I also added to my fruit trees in the back. I just bought a lovely 4 year ild peach tree that is already blossoming. I love peaches! This will be a lovely addition.

My biggest job at this time is placing my bulbs/tubs back into the ground. As some of you may have heard on the news, southern california went under a frost a couple of months ago... I had to dig up the bulbs fearing that they would be harmed by the frozen ground. Now I am back at it trying to re-entraduce them back to their homes! lol

My veggie garden is under way! Over 25 greenbeans plants, half dozen tomatoe, bell pepper, and italian squash, peas, and watermelon are all thriving! There is nothing better!I love this time of year!

Hubby and I planted 3 new rose bushes over the weekend, as well as a easter lilly. I planted 3 lemon fluff? bulbs yesterday. We will see how they do. Veggies will come later....too early here in SD.

I still haven't got my veg garden in. It will not stop raining long enough to till it again. I have everything but the plants (tomatos, potatos, peppers). I want to play in the dirt sooooooo bad. I hope that next week will be better.

Sissy, do you have your tomatoes in wooden pots or beds? I had a problem a few years back with my strawberries which were planted in raised wooden beds. They had these tidy little holes eaten in them by wood bugs. I've also heard them called wood lice. I was puzzled by the holes until I found a bug curled neatly up inside a nice ripe strawberry.< /p>

ohhh interesting! They are in a bed but have a 2x4 wooden surround (to keep the grass out) I will have to look into that.. I noticed today the top of the other Tomato plant was completely keeled over... I dunno if something ate it or if one of the neighborhood kids whacked it.. I am starting to feel like this garden is pointless ;)

Asking for a tip! I want to plant some approx. 24 inch plants in a narrow (18 inch bed) close to the house under the overhand. I want to plant lavendar but I don't know if it will grow. It's part shade, well drained, semi-moist soil

any suggestions?

I've had a really pleasant surprise. Last year my potted Ginko tree kind of got neglected and died from lack of Water. I blamed my knucklehead husband because he usually does the watering.

I was particularly choked because I have had it for a few years and they are very slow growing. I did not relish starting from scratch.

Anyway, I was doing my spring yard clean up this morning, (yeah, I know, it's late) and there was my tree, with little leaves beginning to sprout. Ginko's get their leaves so late that if I had done my spring yard clean any earlier I would have tossed it.

I love it when stuff stubbornly and wonderfully grows back. What a great surprise!

you have to promise not to laugh. But I live in the city and there is little space for gardening and though I requested a space at my local community garden I was told I may have to wait 2 years. So today I bought an areogarden. Its small its compact but I can grow year round now lol I just got it today so wish me luck.

Go to your local Starbucks. They give away used coffee grounds in big 5-10 pound bags. Scatter the grounds around the base of your Tomato plants. It's good organic matter for your soil and the squirrels don't like the smell. They were eating my tomatoes like crazy until we started doing this.

We also have bunnies in the bushes...

Lavender is one of the easiest things to grow. It will grow in hot, dry soil and soil like yours. I've planted it in full shade and the hot sun and it's one of the few things I've had come back year after year. Plus it smells heavenly!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
