pre-op liquid diet digestive issues

Recommended Posts

I've been on my liquid diet for three days now, and have had some problem with diarrhea. Nothing terrible that I'd call the doctor about, but certainly less than ideal. I'm wondering if maybe it's more lactose than I'm used to (I'm drinking Bariatric Advantage, which is kind of gross but it's what my practice gave me), or whether it's something else. Anyone else have this problem?

I've been the opposite for 8 of the 10 days of my liquid diet but yesterday and today my tummy is gurgling real bad and I'm having the runs too. In the past I've had milk/lactose issues but this doesn't seem the same. I'm thinking mine is from the chocolate.

Honestly I'm glad someone else is going through this because I thought my bowels were going nuts.. It make sense. The liquid diet, at least for me, is 5 Optifast shakes and 64 oz of Water at least daily. Your body is probably gonna absorb all of the nutrients it can from the diet which doesn't leave much else to be filtered out and pushed to solid waste... gross i know but tis what it is

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
