Hello all! I had my surgery Monday June 2nd. I am finding it really hard, and I mean REALLY hard getting in any liquids. I maybe have in 4 oz of liquids so far today. I am very worried about the effects of barely drinking. I took my liquid pain medication last night and almost threw up. I felt so sick that I decided not to take anymore. I'm in pain but it's somewhat tolerable. I walk as much as possible and I am doing my breathing exercises so none of that is really a problem. Only issue is the liquids. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It might just be a matter of motivation.

I remember when I was in the hospital getting my tonsils out (as an adult). I didn't want to drink anything. Throat hurt to swallow. As a result of not drinking, I had no urge to urinate. The nurse said if I didn't urinate, they wouldn't let me go home and they would have to put in a ---- catheter-- :o . That did the trick. I was in the bathroom in a flash.

If you don't get enough fluids in, you'll dehydrate and end up in the ER with and IV and a big expense. Keep sipping away....all day. ;)

I found ice and ice chips to be my saving grace the first week. They give off slow and steady intake of liquid. Good luck!

It will get better...have you spoken with your doctor?

You may want to try room temp or warm/hot beverages like Decaf tea... you might find them easier, and more soothing to get down...

Good luck...but, like I mentioned, if it continues to be a problem, contact your doctor so you don't dehydrate...

Agreed, I'm 6 days out and ice or icy drinks made me sick initially. Warm fluids were much easier to get in, or at least room temperature. I'm still avoiding really cold fluids and liquids going down much easier now. Experiment with different flavors and types of liquid just to keep hydrated. That won't all make you sick.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
