Post op? When did your energy increase?

Recommended Posts

I'm about 2 weeks post op and I notice that my motivation to exercise was actually better pre op, 4 days a week exercising before was no problem for me. Im getting in all my liquids and Protein. I know that my body has a lot of changes to adjust to, but I'm wanting feedback on how long after surgery did others regain the drive to work out? I don't know if this is a mental issue or a energy issue for me, it's just crazy that pre op I didn't have this problem.

It took over a month for me just to feel semi-normal. I had to get back into a routine and take some naps when I could. Right now, my favorite work-out is not what it was pre-op. I do a lot of housework, enough to break a sweat, and count that as exercise. I also get on my elliptical machine for much shorter durations at least once a day. For me, it will be a slow process to re-build.

Aargh I am in the same boat. It's so weird but the 1st week post op I was moving around a lot but since last Wednesday, my energy level went drastically down. I just managed a 30 min walk today and plan on continuing on the treadmill daily. I think we have to remember that we did undergo major surgery so out bodies are gradually catching up. Based on the advice from my doctor, it's normal and will get better. Let's hang in there my fellow sleevers!

I hit 10k steps yesterday, at 11 days out. And again today. I'm only allowed walking at present, so it's what I do (I also walked 10k steps 5 days a week for several months pre-op) I want to walk much further, but my legs are really adjusting and I'm having some pain that I didn't before. I'm eagerly looking forward to being able to do more (my CRNP said I can start cycling, but no harsh inclines that will engage my core muscles, but six weeks for yoga or weights)

And no, the 10k steps are not all at once...I take three or four walks daily, one long one in the morning and shorter ones throughout the day.

I'm actually feeling really good about myself at this point and want to get out and move, just to maximize what I can lose during the honeymoon phase.

MsFitN2014--when you say you were you off for three weeks, do you mean you were off work or off exercise? Or both?

Just trying to sort out how realistic my post-op plan is. Thank you--I hope this question doesn't count as hijacking the thread!!

For me it was around the 1 month mark. It takes your body a while to adjust to having fewer calories, and you are still recovering from major surgery.

I had a rough recovery pain-wise, and couldn't do much for the first 2.5 weeks... couldn't take care of my 1 year old at all. By the 4th week I could take care of her by myself, but was exhausted all the time. Week 5 I felt back to normal again. Everyone's recovery will be different, some people seem to bounce right back, but just be careful and ease back into life and especially exercise.

@ceeba....im sorry I was off work for 3 weeks..I worked out everyday during those 3 weeks. I would walk a mile everyday then come home and take a nap, I did push it up to 2 miles around the end of 2 weeks...Now that I am back to work Im only working out 3-days a week with hoping i can get to 5 days a week...also i only walked, now Im riding the bike, on the elliptical and this week will start on 2-5 pound weights!!

Thank you so much for responding, this is just one of those issues that you don't want to feel like your out of the ordinary. I'm looking forward to coming out of the sluggish phase I know that exercise will increase my results and I really want to get a handle on this.

Thank you so much and yes let's hang in there. At least I'm happy about actually wanting to workout, my body just needs to catch up to my mind. Lol, thanks.

Thanks! I never even considered the calorie intake part, my body has to be in some type of shock compared to how I used to eat. Lol. This will get better I'm looking forward to it.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
