7 weeks post op - success and struggles

Recommended Posts

Wow. What a journey so far. I moved onto solid foods 3 weeks ago. It's been challenging. My pallet has changed and it's hard to finish much of what I make.

However, I'm on the go a lot. I do Protein Shakes in the AM. I haven't had breads/starch anything yet. Do I dare fall back on carbs? I wonder if any of those low carb/low cal wraps are safe to eat???

Would love some feedback on this. I just want to be able to throw something in a lunch bag besides fruit and yogurt :)

I'm 10 weeks out and I tried to eat some sugar free low carb bread and I've tried some light English muffin with my egg and both didn't end well. For my lunches I really love the oscar Mayer p3 packs !! And they also have these little roll ups called Rev I take the tortilla off it and just eat the meat and cheese, then will nibble the tortilla after if I have room. It's better then the yogurt and string cheese I've been living on lol

I bought Orowheat Sandwich Thins- they are 100 cal for the entire bun (I can only eat 1/4 of the bun). It sits very easy in my stomach.

I add some eggs, 1/2 slice of Canadian bacon, and 1/2 slice cheese - mini egg McMuffin and all healthy. That is usually Breakfast.....

The other thing I did that week that worked well was I cooked 4 chicken breasts. All marinated different. Once they were done I cut what I would eat this week and then froze the rest in 2 oz servings. Now I just set one out the night before and throw it in my bag. I also throw in string cheese or some hummus, refried Beans.

Because I have no appetite I usually bring half of what I take home, and that serves as lunch the next day :)

This is also a good website for ideas for food

I'm a'scared of the carb right now. My first day on solid foods, my boss bought in pizza to Celebrate (at my request). I had one slice and it sat like a brick. I wanted to take a nap. And it was delicious. But I find I do much better without the white flour stuff. Peanut Butter and nuts are trigger foods for me, so those are no good. But I pack cans of tuna and sardines, Protein powder (stevia sweetened), and occasionally some beef Jerky. Hard boiled eggs are always on hand in the fridge. And I do have baked Beans from time to time.

A new love is blending plain greek yogurt and pineapple with a little coconut extract and freezing that in popsicle molds.

Be well…

When I pack a lunch I usually do a few slices of lunch meat and a cheese stick. I'm only 6 weeks out so not very adventuresome yet.

I just picked up a few of the P3 packs today. I'm excited to have a ready to go lunch or snack, or dinner etc. I'm all about convenience at this point so I don't have to think about food all the time or spend a bunch of time prepping. Trying really hard to make my life revolve around things other than food!

Thanks everyone for chiming in.

Regarding the P3 packs, I have made my own "bistro box". Sliced apple, chopped chicken, a mini Brie cheese, and Nut Thin crackers. Sounds like a lot but it's probably 5 crackers with those items topped.

The low carb honey wheat wraps are going well I only use 1/2 at a time and barely finish that. Not sitting too heavy in stomach. I also used to make a little veggie pizza. Great idea. Quick and easy.

Hope everyone is well.

I love all these ideas!!! Eight weeks today for me. I've looked for the Protein Snacks, but still haven't seen them in my grocery. I keep baggies of almonds as my go to snack, 16 to be exact. Our offices had BBQ today. I took the standard serving and divided into 5 servings for me. My worst eating to date has been to enjoy a bit of Birthday cake. It was nice that I was satisfied with a tiny bit then dispose of the rest. food has been a new experience for me but sweets may still be my downfall.

Keep those ideas coming!!

I actually made pizza last night for dinner using the flat out bread. It has 7 grams of Protein in it. After I added the veggies & turkey pepperoni & low fat cheese mfp said it had a total of 32 grams of protein!! I even sprinkled a little unflavored Protein Powder on it after the sauce for a boost. Of course I could not eat more than a third of one but still was really good & set really well in my stomach.

I've eaten a few bites of carbs here and there. Never more than a few bites of bread but it sat pretty well. I can't eat more than 1/2 cup of anything so I def eat Protein first. I was craving a filaofish from mcdonalds (I have no idea why although I did the same when I was pregnant - I'm def not preg). I ate about 1/2, including bun. It sat well. I track everything. I've had maybe 4 days where I had more than 50 carbs in a day. French fries taste terrible now. Sweets taste ok but I immediately feel guilt and crappy so it's a deterrent. That's the beauty of the sleeve though, one bite leaves me fulfilled. It's still work to focus on low cal, high protein. I used to love cornbread but I can imagine that would be painful. pizza is my trigger food. It sits way easier than I wish it did. I'm trying to stay away from it,even if I'm full in one piece. It's the only thing I've eaten that I really, really want more of. My head wants it more than my stomach.

Hi all! I am 6 weeks out and down 39 lbs. i haven't had any real bread, Pasta or rice, but I was craving something with a little more substance so I bought Wasa light. It's a multigrain crackerbread. One cracker, which is a nice size, is about 22 calories. I add a laughing cow wedge and a slice of boar's head turkey and I am full for less than 100 calories...delicious. Sometimes I replace the turkey which perdue chicken cuts diced really small and add avocado. Very satisfying!

Tonight was my daughters prom. After we went to see all the kids my hubby thought we should stop to eat somewhere. Well I ordered a grilled chicken salad. I had about 4 bites then I felt awful. I don't know what it was with the salad but for at least an hour afterwards I had pain in my stomach & then gas. I made sure I had chicken in every bite so I don't know what caused it. The waitress did look at me weird when I asked for a to go container and the manager came over to make everything was ok. 7 weeks ago I would have ate the whole thing plus the bread that comes with it lol.

I am 4 weeks out & I stick to tuna salad with cottage cheese for lunch & a shake for Breakfast. I tend to do scrambler eggs & Beans for dinner & the only carbs I've had that didn't give me trouble was whole wheat crackers & polenta. I don't have either often but when I crave a crunch, soft wheat crackers are as far as I will go right now. bread & tortillas still scare me :)

Good luck!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
