Will GERD or GASTRITIS Affect my surgery?

Recommended Posts

Well, I was "scoped" today and the results were GERD and Gastritis. Has anyone experienced this and will this affect my sleeve surgery from happening or does it give the green light to go on with the surgery?? By time I woke up from my sleep, the doctor was gone for the day and told me to call, but it was too late.....

It shouldn't affect your surgery. You will probably be put on a PPI ( stomach acid medicine) before and definitely after surgery

I had GERD (caused by a slipped band - so thats a little different) before my sleeve and my dr didn't seem to think there was a problem with it. I've taken 40mg of Prilosec 2x a day before and since (9 Mths) and once in a great while I'll wake up in the middle of the night burning and miserable. But it's pretty much under control.

I've also read on this board that if u have prior reflux problems, that the sleeve will make it worse. That drs recommend RNY. Not sure how true that is. Hopefully u can talk to u dr soon and find out ur options.

As I said, my reflux was caused by a slipped band, not gastritis or other problems. That may make a difference!

Good luck!

I haven't had my endoscopy yet, but I have reflux. I discussed it with my surgeon and the reflux has been brought on by my weight and food choices, so he feels it won't be a problem once I get the weight off/change my habits. Unless something he wasn't expecting comes up in the endoscopy, I should be fine. He also prescribes Nexium for all his patients for the first 6 months post op just in case.

I did not know the I had reflux before, but apparently I did. I just thought of it as mild indigestion, took my Pepcid and went on my way. I've been sleeping on a wedge pillow most nights since my sleeve. I hope to not need this in the long-term as my dr said it usually improves after about 3 months.

i have had GERD for about 35 years, quite literally. i was about 5 or 6 when i remember seeing a pediatric GI doc for 'heartburn'. i have been on a PPI for about 20 years now and doing well. i also had barrett's lesions around 2006 but negative since then.

my surgeon and I had a very long discussion about either surgery and i was all set to have RNY, but he really feels that I will be just as successful with VSG. I carry ALL my weight in the abdomen- i often get asked when i am due- and the surgeon says that once I lose my belly weight the reflux should pretty much be gone.

since I take a HUGE dose of PPI (protonix 40-60 mg twice daily) now, I will stay on a high dose post op for several months until there is some good loss, then start to decrease it.

my insurance only pays for ONE bariatric surgery in a lifetime so i am stepping out in HUGE faith and trusting him and his experience in this.

i also know that this is a HUGE incentive for me to really stick to my diet and follow the rules to avoid any problems.

best of luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
