Surgery date: 4/28/2014.

I am on a liquid diet with Protein shakes until May 22 when I go for my follow up and diet advancement.

I know I'm only 1 week out, but it is getting better every day. Sip, sip, sip - the smallest sips I've ever taken in my life!

Some of the things I'm finding helpful:

Standing up to drink (gravity is my freind).

Slow, deep breathing or using my incentive spirometer when I have discomfort.

Alternating sweet and salty and/or hot and cold.

I came home from the hospital with small, 1oz plastic cups - I have frozen my Protein Shakes with a toothpick in them and the Protein popsicles go down sooooo easy!

I am certain to take my prescribed Vitamins and acid reducer (PPI) every day.

It is still a long way to May 22 and diet advancement but I'm seeing results already. :)

I had surgery on Tuesday the 29th, and I can only do liquids for 2 weeks. I've been having broth, popsicles, and hot chocolate that is specifically from my doctor's office. Everything still catches and hurts in my chest going down and I'm worried about getting my ounces in.

Mine was the same day and I'm having same issues

I had my surgery on 4-23 and was only allowed liquids 2 weeks before surgery and have to stay on liquids until I am transitioned to soft foods on 5-12. So that means Protein Shakes, broth, Jello, Popsicles, pudding, and Powerade zero for over a month. This is seriously making me crazy! I admit I have mixed in some mashed potatoes with my Protein broth a few times so I can feel satisfied, but this is the toughest diet I have ever had to follow. I give a lot of kudos to everyone who is going through this because it is definitely a true test of if you really want to change your life. Good luck to everyone!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
