Looking For A Surgeon

Recommended Posts

Hey :)

I am 23 years old and weigh 440 pounds. I decided about a month ago to do the Gastric Sleeve surgery and there are SO MANY different clinics and doctors. My finances are pretty constricted so i have been looking into clinics in Mexico mainly. Just thought i would ask around on here to see who you went to and where? And how your experience was with your doctor? Any input/feedback is much appreciated and will help immensely in my decision on where to go!

Thanks :)

Hi Britt. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck in this. I had my surgery here in the US so I have no advice about the doctors in Mexico. You might get more answers if you post this in the forum for foreign surgeries/ Mexico/ etc. There are many people on t here who went to Mexico so you should get a lot of responses if you are in the correct forum. I highly recommend the WLS so good luck you.

WLS is just short for weight loss surgery. There are numerous types and you have to go with the one that is best for your medical issues. I had the sleeve but I didn't have a lot of comorbidities. If you have High BP or diabetes... I think the Roux NY is the best. There are more types of course but I am not well versed in them. I wish I had done the surgery when I was younger. That's my only regret. You'll do fine.

I also have limited funds and have found two good options. One was through Jerusalem Hospital for $3750 which is a clinic setting and another through Medical Tourism Co. For $4000 which is at the Florence Hospital. I first booked the least expensive (SIL and her friend went there and received great care) but just switched to florence Hospital to make my husband feel better about me traveling alone. From what I have researched, they are all pretty good in Mexico and and the care is good. I wish I had the money to take a buddy but I can't. Good luck!

I have nothing but good things to say about my surgeon, dr illan. His company is called BajaBariatrics.com and I recommend it. He is a trauma surgeon in addition to numerous sleeves. Very personable. His coordinator Omar is amazing and helps you through all the details. Cost varies on BMI, and he works from Florence Hospital in Tijuana.

I was sleeved in Mexico due to my insurance in the US would not cover WLS..... I used Dr Mario Almanza.... He was with Hospital Jerusalem.... He has apparently gone on his own now.... If you google his name he now has his own website.... Both myself and another friend used him...... I had a text book recovery with no complications whatsoever..... I went in January 2014 and my cost was $4500.......this was in Tijuana Mexico......

I had my surgery in Reynosa, Mexico (right next to Mission, Texas). You would fly into McAllen, Texas. My surgery coat was $6999 and included one night hospital stay. My surgeon was Dr Felipe Cantu. Google him and you'll find the corresponding phone number to reach his staff. Patty and Alejandra are both patient coordinators and speak English as most of the staff does, including the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, nutritionist and psychiatrist. Best hospital care I ever received and I did not have any complications.

I had surgery April 7th in Tijuana. My surgeon was Alejandro Lopez. I have no complaints! I went alone and felt 100% safe the entire time. Great experience! Oh and I booked through specialized Bariatrics, $4200.

I had surgery at Florence Hospital back in May. The hospital is like a small county hospital. The hospital has a nice courtyard that is inclosed. It is also 4 blocks from the ocean and 4 blocks to a Walmart. I traveled alone and walked to both places alone. I felt safe in that area. The staff at the hospital were very nice and Dr. Rayne was very nice (he was there in case any medical needs arose) . I was lucky enough to get to stay on the top floor of the hospital instead of going to a motel. Also, there is a light house on the north side of the bull fighting arena next to the border. I enjoyed my stay there.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
