It seems every doctor is different - Here is what I've seen different on this forum and these are the questions I would confirm

  • What is the pre-op diet requirement - some require 2 weeks, my doctor required none
  • Some have different post -op diets, I was full liquid 2 3 weeks, soft foods 2 weeks, regular food after. I've seen some doctors require 4 weeks on each stage
  • What are the Vitamin requirements after surgery
  • Exercise - when can you start (mine was 6 weeks, I've seen others at 3/4 weeks start)
  • What is the expected stay in the hospital (i was released the next day--some stay 3-4 days)
  • What are his/her recommendations in returning to work.
  • You might also ask about follow up visits to the doctor. I saw mine after 2 weeks, next is 3 months, 6 months and yearly post op,
  • Hopefully he/she will help you navigate through insurance requirements if you are pursuing insurance coverage. Some require a 6 month plan prior to surgery, some 3, some none.
  • Research they changes you will need to make after surgery and know that this is a change for life, Things like no soda, no alochol for 6 months (that was my dr's recommendation) and not drinking with your meals. Some of these changes can me the hardest.
  • read about what "head hunger" is :)

I would also check out YouTube and watch the surgery (if you aren't queasy). It was very informative.

Good Luck and Best Wishes!!!

How did your appointment go?

At my first visit we discussed the different wls and which one I'd like. Bloodwork and I met with the insurance lady to go over all the prerequisites for insurance.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
