Is glugging down a whole glass of water okay?

Recommended Posts

Maybe this is a strange question. Every morning when I wake up, and right before I go to bed, I drink a large glass of Water in like five seconds flat. Also, I can't imagine being thirsty and/or hot after working in the yard, then coming in and taking only a sip or two of water at a time. I'm a glugger, I guess. Will I still be able to glug after the surgery? Never really thought about how hard it would be not to hydrate this way.

At first, no, you can only sip. Later on you will gradually be able to drink more. I could glug pretty well at 7 months.

I couldn't glug right away. Sipping was a challenge. Now I am 4 months out, and I have times when glugging is possible. NEVER right after eating, but when my tummy isn't full, I find I can drink normally.

It is tempting for me also to chug Water, especially when I am very hot. Some people hAve an easier time sipping than others. You may be able to take big sips and you may not, but you most likely will not be able to chug a whole glass, tempting as it may be. I try not to chug because if I drink too much at a time I feel uncomfortable, but sometimes I forget lol.

I'm 3 days post-op and as of right now it HURTS to drink fast. I like to chug as well, but with a 4 oz stomach it's just not possible.

Worst experience in the hospital was when I had a swallow test. I drank some barium liquid. I asked how to swallow? They told me just normally..... That was the new normal, not my old style gulping normal. It all stopped (with my nose tube in place) just above my stomach, and stayed there for the better part of 10 minutes. It looked cool on the ex-ray though.

Today, almost 7 weeks, I can glug a little, but it's more like sip, sip, glug, then wait.

I had to re-learn how much I could safely drink at one time. Now, it's an unconscious habit. I can glug down a few big gulps safely, but I'm sure the swallows are not as big as they were pre-op.

That is what worries me. I like Water and I drink it fast. I also take all my pills at once with lots if water. I'm afraid of that.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
