first real meal after sleeve

Recommended Posts

Thursday will be 6 weeks and I can move on to normal foods but I am terrified. So far all I've tried are Beans, mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs and they were fine but I'm still scared. What were your first successful meals?

Start slow. For me it was and still is complete trial and error. I can eat a chicken drumstick from the BBQ but I can't handle a plain grilled burger. First thing I had was oven baked fish.

First thing I had was a slice of pizza. It sat like a brick in my tummy. It was delicious. A couple days later it was Easter Sunday and I attended an all-you-can eat brunch. I used an appetizer-sized plate, bought my baby utensils with me, and had a bite or two of assorted Protein items: shrimp, short ribs, veal, fish. And a creme brulee for dessert. Delicious.

Solids foods, while mostly agreeing with me, are sitting hard in the tummy. I'm leaning towards the softer choices for now and trying to remember to chew slowly.

Be well…

I did a lot of things in the crock pot because they turn out so tender. Any kind of chicken breast in the crockpot - even did a meatloaf....everything was so tender that I could eat it all....only a little of it, but went down and sat on my tummy fine. :) The advice to start slow is right. Don't go for pizza or fast food. Be gentle on your new stomach...you're still healing.

I ate alot of chili in the first few weeks. Almost everyday. My first "real meal" after 4 weeks of liquids was refried Beans with a dollup of sour cream and cheddar cheese. It was like steak and lobster. After eating a soft diet for another 4 weeks (canned tuna, canned chicken salad, cottage cheese, Beans, chili, eggs, melba toast, etc) my first "real" meal was a Red Robin Avo Cobbo salad (as I was then cleared for fresh veggies). I ate about 4-6 bites and brought the rest home. I'm now 9 mths out and can eat maybe 10 bites of it now. It makes at least 4 meals for me I usually get sick of it and toss it a couple days later.

Good luck! Congrats on the real food!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
