Blood clots from travelling on a plane after surgery.

Recommended Posts

Can someone please tell me their experience with flying after surgery. My friend said that the doctors in Mexico don't tell you anything about this or give you anything like blood thinners.

I was advised no flying for four weeks, for this reason. But that's here in the UK.

Clearly if you're going to Mexico, you're going to have to fly. (Unless you live there, or can drive there!)

Standard procedure for avoiding DVT on a plane, is applicable in this case, too.

If you're not given blood thinners, take 1/2-1 tablet of asprin. This thins the blood.

Drink lots of Water. No high-sugar or any alcohol (for obvious reasons)

Wear compression socks on your legs.

Keep mobile whilst in the air and if you have a nice friend with you, get them to massage your lower calves regularly.

That's the best you can do to mitigate the risks. Unless, of course, the Mexicans can help you with additional drugs, etc.

Spot on! (did I get that right)

Does your friend work for your surgeon in Mexico? If not, she has no idea what he does and does not do. Talk directly to your surgeon or one of his nurses about your concerns. I asked about all of this before going down for my surgery so I knew I would receive blood thinners and that I would be given compression stockings to wear and that I should get up and walk the aisles if my flight was really long and that I should walk through the airports if I had a layover and not get a wheelchair. I had no problems flying 3 days postop or driving myself home from the airport.... A 5 hour drive during which I stopped several times to get out and walk around.

Yes your are correct , I just started to panic. I emailed the surgeon right after talking to my friend and now I'm waiting for his reply. Also I've been getting a lot if positive feedback and the same suggestion with the compression socks and walking a lot. Thanks everyone. I feel calmer now. So grateful for this site!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
