I am having laparoscopic gastric bypass. I am a teacher and am hoping to teach summer school, 6 hours a day, only 3 with kids, then 3 hours in meetings, only 4 days a week. Can I only take one week off after surgery? Would this be doable?

I think everyone is different . I have been off since surgery That was March 3rd . I've been sick with eating food now I might have kidney stones . It will be up to your dr and your body .

My doctor advised best to take a month off if you can but if you can not then 2 weeks is the best. Now that I have done my surgery I personally think for me a month of recovery is a must. Everyone is different..in my case I had lay offs and when I got laid off, I had my surgery on march 31, 10 days after the last day of my work and now I am aiming to join may 5. So it's upto the individuals. Keep in mind internally we have staples that take 6-8 weeks to heal and also after surgery you have to build your stamina to be able to walk and have energy. 10 days after surgery is all liquid and then puréed and then soft foods and then so and so forth. I am on my puréed diet now. Your internally healing is very important cause you don't want to deal with any gastric leakage. Also you cannot push, push, carry etc anything and do anything strenuous. All this also affects your mind cause you do get tired a lot quicker after surgery than before. It's really upto you.

I am taking a 1.5 weeks off. I work a desk job and may do some half days as well.

I had my RNY laproscopicly on June 25, 2013. I had absolutely no complications and a very easy recovery. I had two weeks off and went back week three half days. I work in the District Office of a school district. I could have easily returned full days that third week. I have a desk job.

I think the two weeks are important. You are really learning to eat again. This is also major surgery and you do have to recover. My clinic told us that those that take two full weeks have better results long term. A few more days for long term success is really worth it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
