joining the lap-band group

Recommended Posts

hello everyone!

I am having my lap-band done Wednesday by Dr. Spivak in Houston. I am really excited and nervous too as I am sure all of you were. I am proud to be a part of such a successful group!

Any words of wisdom out there?:paranoid

Hi Tracy, I have heard some wonderful things about Dr. Spivak so you are in good hands. They only advise I can give you is how important it is to follow the postop diet to a tee. You are in the healing stages and its important because of the sutures which hold the band in place. You may feel like you aren't very hungry initially. It will be very important for you to sip just a little bit initially. You don't want to gulp any liquid. If you get really hungry you can have anything that fits through a straw on the liquid phase. Creamy Soups really helped me out. If you get hungry and don't feel restriction and want to eat everything in site, this can happen. It is because you don't have any solution in your band so you are wide open. When you get a fill or 2 6 weeks post op this should cure some hunger and fullness. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am glad to help. Julie

Tracy~

I second what Julie said,,they give you strict guidlines for a reason,,dont let your emotions override your sensibilites. For some reason,,maybe 70's flashbacks,,lol,,I keep hearing this in my head:

"Nurture strength and spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all it's sham and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~~ part of Desiderata

Good luck on your journey,,,keep posting,,you're among friends here.

Thanks Deb & Julie. I know it is going to be a long road, but SO worth it. I had previously lost 150 pounds 12 years ago on my own. Luckily I have not gained ALL of it back, but it seems that since I had my daughter (she is 3 now) I can not lose like I used to, so before I DID gain it all back, I am having the band done. Any words of encouragement are greatly appreciated!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
