Hiccup/Burp - 5 days post op - help?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I had surgery on monday....FINALLY feeling like myself again. Well, out of nowhere (just sitting at the computer) i suddenly had a hiccup (took in a deep breath) and then burped....it didn't hurt...but...felt.......funny, i guess (cuz i hadn't had that happen since surgery...used to happen a lot to me though).

I feel fine now....nothing hurts.....but just wondering if anyone else has had this and if i sould be worried? haven't had anyone describe anything like this before so i wasn't sure what to think. I know I can come here to get insight...so, I figured this would be my first stop :-D

THANKS!

Pands, hiccups and burping are very common with the band. When you eat especially. It is the bodies way of telling you that you are getting full. Congrats on being banded. Julie

I shouldn't worry too much about hiccuping and burping. I burped a lot after surgery and my band is perfectly intact and doing it's job well. Everything is bound to feel a bit odd for a time as it's probably still very swollen from being being pulled about during the surgery.

Your stomach will never feel like it did before the surgery but you will get to learn what is normal and what isn't.

Hope this helps put your mind at rest!

Thanks so much guys.....

I just wasn't sure....I hadn't had a hiccup since before surgery (especially not a hiccup/burp together), so it just felt...different, and i wanted to be sure.

I'm the paranoid type....LOL. But you guys have totally made me feel better (plus, I figured if i wasn't hurting, i was fine...but...again, paranoid....probably will be for the first few months...lol).

Thanks again :)

Panda, no problem. Let us know if you have any other concerns or questions. I remember how it was being newly banded. Good luck!

Panda - I'm 2 days post op and having hiccups and burps too. Usually after I've moved around a bit... sitting to standing...or after too many sips of my Water too fast. I think that's the signal we're supposed to be watching out for!!

I asked this same question a year ago! It is normal to have a weird sort of hiccup after surgery. It will eventually go away and can be unrelated to eating or drinking.

Good luck!

Me too.

My surgeon anchored the band to my diaphragm. The diaphragm is responsible for hiccups.

I couldn't burp without a hic for months...

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :omg: :omg: AHHHHHHHH!!! GRRRRRR!!!!

Did it work? My attempt was to scare the hiccups out of you. :nervous You could also try standing on your head. Just a suggestion. :rolleyes

Hope you feel better. :(

The only time I burp anymore is when it's triggered by a hiccup. I think it's from the added pressure on the diaphram. They rarely hurt, though, so I never worry about it.

Too funny :)

I'm still burping...and only done the hiccup thing a few times....but here's another question --

when you burp, do you feel a weird sensation in the middle of your chest....??

it's like i can feel my stomache trying to push the air out....lol...hard to explain...i'm not too worried about it, my mom had lapband surgery the same day, same doc as me and she's experiencing the same things...but i was just curious since i had this thing going :)

Thanks guys!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
