Does everyone have to wait six months before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had to wait six months. My insurance company wanted me to have monthly weigh ins and make sure I was committed to this life changing surgery. At first I was discouraged about the wait time, but when it was said and done it worked out for me. The main thing going through my mind was "what if I go through all this and they deny me". My doctors office reassured me everything would be fine (as far as approvals), and it was.

OMG I was thinking the same thing so I ask and was told after I do the 6 months I had nothing to worry about

I was in fear paying money for my 6 month classes etc to just be denied .........FYI - I am in the beginning stage

Good luck to you! I am sure everything will work out for you. I thin I lost the majority of my weight waiting for approval!

My insurance required six months of medically supervised weight loss (which was actually seven months, because they don't count the first visit). At first I was aggravated that I had to do that, but not that I am done and surgery is scheduled I feel it really was to my benefit. I was able to "kick" my soda habit, start to minimize my caffeine consumption, start eating better and do a lot of research! I had to lose 10% of the weight I was overweight before my surgeon's office would submit me for insurance approval.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
