my port hurts

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3/14/07 and I did some low impact aerobics yesterday afternoon and by 5pm my port hurt so bad. I have been walking and riding a stationary bike with no problems. It didn't hurt during or right after but a few hours later and it is still sore today. Did anyone else have port pain after exercising?? ;)

I have port pain randomly...sometimes its after high impact aerobics, sometimes after cycling and sometimes lying on the couch watching a movie....lets remember something here....they have wired a port to your ribs! They didn't let lambs lick it there...they have probed your insides....its going to be sore from time to time. My 2 cents...when you experience it...take note...don't do that particular exercise for a while and then try it again. You are very new to the healing process still and you need to give yourself time. This is very close to those abs that we all try so hard to work....be good to yourself....cardio is your friend...weight lifting is your friend...give your tummy some time to heal...again just my 2 cents...POPT

Hi there,

I to have port pain. I was banded 1 monkth ago today. I feel my port almost all the time. It doesnt matter what I do. I really try not to bend over much due to the sticking I feel. I have heard that it could take months for the pain to subside.

Glad to here I am not the only one experiencing this.

Actually, the port is sewn to the muscle. So yes, it might 'smart' from time to time. Mine surely does and I rarely forget it is there at 9 months now.

But the pain of being 100 pounds overweight is far worst in my opinion.

Hi there Lap band folks...I have found a way to deal with the port pain...Now that I am 16 days post surgery. I have decided to ride my bike a lot when I am not up to walking in the gym. for 4 days now--I have been doing racing with the 2 boys I have. We race--they've beat me each time. But with the energy I born--you know when the stomach is hurting--the legs are burning. I have noticed--the pain is nothing compared to the leg pain I've hard each time. It's a great thing. Yeah--it's been great pain---getting in shape pain. I know--without--there is no gain in energy. Just keep on pushing...

My port doesn't hurt any longer when I try to roll over in bed. The stitches they used to sew it to my muscle must be all healed.

I cannot bend over on my right side to tie my shoe, it's as if my port is being smashed into my insides.

I started to "jog" 1 minute for every 7 minutes I'm on my treadmill this last Mon...port was very noticable while jogging. Must have been the up and down motion of my jigglie body that made it bounce around!

It's getting better.

Kinda scared for my 1st fill in 10 days. Don't want that needle to hurt!

don't the doctors numb the site with EMLA cream or 1% Lidocaine before the fill? Just curious. Went today to fill my paperwork out for the consultation

I was banded in February. I found that when I started doing more strenuous exercise, that I had port pain if I over did it. I no longer have the pain when I exercise. You might want to try going a little easuer for a while.

I was told NO aerobic exercise and no lifting more than 20 lbs for the first 6 weeks after surgery. They were concerned about the twisting and bending motion (anything that puts strain on the abdomen). I was given the ok to walk. I've been walking several times a day on my treadmill and I noticed if I go to fast and start to "jiggle" then my port bothers me too. I just slow it down. You don't want to compromise the healing because it can Twist or the sutures could come undone and that would mean minor surgery to repair it back into place. Take it easy and don't over do it remember you are still Healing.

The port is stitched in between the "fat" layer and your abdominal muscle wall. Ultimately it is going to be the scar tissue that holds it into place more so than the sutures.

Hope this helps!

I too was banded 3/14/7 and started exercising 2 wks prior (was up to 30 min). I resumed 10 days post Op 15/18/22 min. now am up to 35 min. (walk, bike, eliptical). Even though I have pangs of pain in the port constantly, exercising didn't seem to aggravate it. Bending down from a sitting position, the other night REALLY did. GOT SCARED. So the following day I only did 10 min on the bike. What really hurts has been my BACK since the day after OP. 5 WKS--When will it go away!?!?!?!?!?! Heating pad, Motrin 600 and stretching doesn't help. ANY SUGGESTIONS???

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
