Bloated, acid reflux and still have wind

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on the 3rd March, I am still really bloated (my belly is bigger than before I went for the op) and I have really bad wind. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how long did it take for it to go down and the wind to actually clear up?
I am taking gaviscon to help with the wind but I really really hate the taste even if it does help, I would love to be able to stop using it.

My other issue is I have really bad acid reflux since the operation, I never had this before the op. Has anyone else had this problem and if so are they still suffering it or did it clear itself?

Yep, exactly. I had the same symptoms. I take Protonix/ Prilosec everyday first thing in the morning. It will help with the acid reflux. You might need to do this for 3 or 4 months. As far as the gas, the way to get rid of it is to start moving. You need to walk a couple of miles a day and it will make all the difference in the world. Maybe a mile in the morning and one in the afternoon. Your stomach is still swollen and tender inside so that is why your stomach seems larger than before. It's going to take at least 6 to 8 weeks after surgery for the swelling to be completely gone. Mine is still a tiny bit swollen but doctor says to give another week or two and I won't notice it. It's all a part of the healing process. Just go with the flow and you will be fine.

I have limited mobility and I am actually registered disabled so walking a mile is simply a no go for me, I have been walking as much as I can but its no where near a mile.
Glad to hear things will settle, I really hate the acid reflux.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
