Disappointing show, everyone still fat!

Recommended Posts

So the other night my surgeons office held a ceremony for everyone that had wls in 2013. My surgery was 10/21 so I was excited to go and see everyone's progress. I know what they say about expectations but it was really kind of depressing. They had people seated in groups by month, December, November, October then September, August etc.. as each group got up I expected (haha) that for the most part each group would be a little skinnier. With the exception of a few people the October, November December group was the thinnest! I wish I hadn't gone to this ceremony. I feel so discouraged after seeing all of these still fat people. I was one of the thinnest people in the whole room and I wasn't expecting that! Arg... I really need to find a way to get that picture out of my head!

I know what you mean. My last check-up I wasn't able to see my surgeon, but his co-worker. He did come see me when I was scheduling my next appointment because he wanted to see my progress. When we did speak for a minute or two he mentioned that I was an exception, and others were not doing as well. I was shocked because I thought everyone was doing well...Just goes to show that it is a committment and there are no easy ways.

very true..its a commitment to sensible eating..the day I dont have enough Protein I am sure to put on weight..and then it takes quite a few days for those few gms to come down..so every day is important.

we have to make life time habits ....of eating proper food at proper times.

That's right. Don't forget we all come from different places! If you start at 400 pounds, I am sure 200 feels pretty fantastic!

I was over 400lbs I am just a tiny bit under 200 now its frigging great!
I am also a little over 6ft tall with really long legs and a long body so I have always looked smaller than I actually am because its spread out more and skinnier arms and legs has that trick of the eye effect.
Just like shorter people look a lot bigger because its not as stretched out.
Maybe they were doing better than you think who knows but still they are down from what they were that’s all that matters really.

Too right sassy,

Optical illusion love. Let us not judge people that are over weight, there are too many people that judge others, including us.

And a big well done to you, how good is that, can't wait for my procedure. I've lost over 40lbs pre-op, but loads still to go

Seela, that would have bummed me out also. I went to our hospital support group last night and came out feeling like you. Very few superstars there . I am sympathetic to the support aspect of the group but each session turns into a "band " vs "sleeve " rally. Which one is best ??? Blah blah blah . That's a question for the surgeon - not strangers . Just my opinion ... I like it here much better .

As they say, the surgery is only a tool. If you are not committed and use the sleeve to its full potential, you wont see big results. My last Dr visit, they had a spreadsheet of all the patients and their progress. And it had a full range from dramatic loss to very little.

The sleeve is not magic, you still have to work at losing the weight, but its a hell of alot easier than without it.

I realize that, and I took that into consideration, but in a room with a couple hundred wls patients I expected to see more that were thinner. Especially at over a year out for a lot of them.

I couldn't agree more, and I thought about that. I was taking in the whole picture and out of 150-200 people there were only a handful that weren't still very fat. I doubt that almost every one of them started at over 400 lbs. It was just depressing and surprising. I wasn't trying to judge anyone as I was in the same boat, it was simply unexpected.

Please understand, I wasn't judging as much as surprised.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
