The criticizing bookstore clerk

Recommended Posts

My fiancée and I just went to bookstore, to get a book about gastric sleeve surgery. The bookstore clerk WENT OFF on us. She told my fiancée he didn't need it done. He has bmi of 39, struggled w his weight all his life. He tried explaining to her what a gastric sleeve was and also that we were going to Mexico to have it done. " your gonna lose too much weight and DIE!!!" She also had many other negative comments and continued talking as we walked out the door. Seriously???We just wanted a book no comments. Does anybody else get negative remarks? Example: " you are just lazy and need to workout?"

Darling

Where do these people get off? All you wanted was a book, not a lecture. And, she should keep her opinions to herself. There are a lot of judgemental people out there, experts in every field. But that's why she works in a bookshop I guess.

I had an experience in a Zumba class. The instructor came to me after the class wanting my phone number. I started to write it then asked why???? She said that she had been to someone that helped her loose weight. I was so shocked. I had lost almost forty pounds, as part of the pre op, and really didn't need her opinions or help. I wanted to do Zumba. The skinny little things at the front of the class began laughing...... She should have realised how hard it is for a large person to join a class, not judge them, it's not their place. Or bookshop staff. What right do they have? I never went back to the class, bet you never went back to the store. Then I wonder, why sell the book? Why not put a weight restriction in the class? Why don't overweight people just stay in, not go to keep fit classes, not buy books to research. Just stay out of judgemental peoples way?

I haven't heard many negative comments about WLS at the hospital where I work. I am sure those comments are out there somewhere, but I couldn't care less. My friends use to call me "Big-T" and I rolled with it, because they are my friends. Now, they call me "Skinny." It always brings a tear to my eye and a smile on my face. Tomorrow when I weigh in, I should be under 200. I got a little of topic with this reply, so yes BOOOOOO to all those un-educated people that feel compelled to give you their negative opinions!!!

I probably would've laughed in her face and said "oh your medical practice is doing so well that you need to come in and sell books" then I would've really shot back at her and said "you know what I would like to buy a copy of this book for you as well. You look as though you could benefit from weight loss surgery"

those kind of things I usually tend to turn around and have fun with them rather than get pissed off. Getting pissed off just means they got under your skin.

That's terrible. I understand she might have been trying to be 'nice' but wow. Keep your opinions to yourself. Right now I am dealing with the negative crap from my step-father since he has had two cousins of his die from getting the lapband. (Back in the '80s) But you know that just gives your fiance a reason to bust into that bookstore after surgery and have her see him and watch as her mouth closes shut. =)

Not only would I go talk to the manager but I would be writing an email to corporate about her. She is there to sell books not give her opinion on what you are buying. I don't let things like that go when people are rude she has no business working with the public. What if you were buying sexual fantasy books would she have said you can't do that because its for skinny people. Ugh I hate rude retail people.

I totally agree with talking to the manager and emailing corporate. It is none of her business what book you buy.

Why do TOTAL STRANGERS think they have a right to lecture someone who is overweight?????

Why is it that TOTAL STRANGERS who don't know you at all think they have the license to lecture you about ANYTHING? Before the surgery, I would recieve unsolicited advice from people who "found the magic bullet" to lose weight. When I think about it now--I ask myself, "why didn't I just tell them to PHUCK OFF?" "Oh because you're such a nice, polite girl who would never stand up for herself" my alter ego responds.

I've really noticed since I've lost weight from the surgery---people I don't know at all, treat me with more deference. Maybe it's a reflection of my attitude?

Back to the subject at hand, I would definetly email corporate, more importantly, the manager needs to know that their employee is poetentially making customers--EXcustomers.

I would noever go back to that store again as I'm normally not a non-confrontational person. That may change though--getting more confidence as I am losing weight and a less willing to put up with other people's crap.

Good luck with your surgery, I wish you the best.

Blessings,

Kathleen

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
