What liquids do you have pre-op?

Recommended Posts

Believe or not it seems this varies by surgeon. My pre-op diet will be Protein Shakes, crystal light, herbal non caffeinated teas, sf Jello & Popsicles, and broth. I have an amazing friend I met on these boards her surgery is Tuesday and she can have 3 Protein shakes, the other items mentioned and mines, and a light meal for diner 4 ounces of meat small amount veggies and while grain. Others I've chatted with have to drink specific optimum or bariatric advance shakes so it can very. I'm not looking forward to pre-op diet but being at my highest weight in my life and tired of being tired I'm feeling can-do-ishhhh lol hahaha

13 days were Protein drinks(up to 5 per day), Water, broth, any sugar free drinks. I lived on Vitamin Water Zero and now I can't even look at a bottle....lol. On the 14th day, Clear liquids only.

The first 3 days were brutal, no lie...but after day 4 the hunger subsides. I think back now and I am amazed I did it.

Good luck.

And I am almost half way thru my pre op, which is regular food, limiting carbs to 30, nothing fried, and hi Protein. Amazing how different they are. So most meats, most veggies, and some fruit are fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
