How much liquid is in the band at first? I was told that even before my first fill that I already have some restriction. Apparently this is a feature in the newer bands.

I was told that mine was "primed" with like 2.5 - or somewhere around that :)

Some surgeon's do prime their bands, some do not. Mine was not but it wsa 4 1/2 years ago. My son had his band placed about 2 years ago, and his was primed. Hope that helps. I don'tknow how much, tho'. Karen

Many bands are not primed but the mere fact that you have the band around your stomach is still a limiting factor. I felt from the gitgo that I could and did eat less but I felt no restriction. The stoma(opening between pouch and stomach) is much smaller than the pre-band opening was, so food does go past the pouch slower once you start eating more solid foods.

Thanks everyone for responding. I wonder if it will be "enough" for me or I'll have to get my first fill ...Time will tell.

my doc does put Fluid in during surgery but takes it out before closing up - at my first fill he sucked out everything before he filled - so we knew exactly what was in the band. Might be a good act to request so you are confident with what is/is not in your band. I did not feel much restriction until Fill #3 - and it definitely has it's moments - moment by moment. Weird how one time it's severe restriction and then the next I can eat quite a bit without feeling it.

Good luck!

I saw an educational video where a surgeon discussed this. He stated that the different Lapband manufacturers have differing recommendations on priming the band. It is recommended for some bands but not for others. But these are recommendations. Each surgeon makes the ultimate decision on many factors.

Each surgeon is different. It is something to ask your doctor on your next visit.

Mine wasn't primed, but the surgeon said there would be some restriction due to swelling from surgery.

Primed means the Surgeon added Fluid at the time of the surgery.

And usually it's not so that you feel restriction just yet. Mostly just snug on the stomach. Rarely more than 3 CCs. I don't think mine had any in it.

Mine had 3.5 cc in it. I know this because it had to be removed because I was SUPER swollen and had complications.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
