PB Question - Just had one! Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I am 2 months out and have had the golf ball feeling a few times, two excess saliva incidents, and a minor pb once.

Well, tonight I had some asparagus and salmon for dinner and had the worst golf ball, pain in back and PB ever!!

I had some terrible spitting and hacked up some foam too. I kind of sounded like I had a fur ball!! I did finally produce some salmon while I was hacking. It sort of came out in a ball...

I ran to Wal-mart and got some papaya enzymes. That has helped.

Right now, my throat and abdomen (left side) hurt a bit.

My questions are this: Are you putting the same strain on your band/stomach when you PB as you would when you vomit? Should I call my Dr? Have I ruined my band??

Like I said, I have had maybe 2 pb's total and a couple of sliming incidents.

This has been a wake up call! I only hope I am not too late!

I am scared!:cry

Its not great for you band to PB but most people do it at times and their bands survive it. Its PBing several times a week or more that's problematic.

I've only had it happen once, it was awful and my stomach was sore for days, I pulled a muscle.

PBing is often times a way to learn what foods you will tolerate and what you won't. Everyone does it at one time or another.

You'll need to go on full liquids for the rest of the day, maybe try soft foods tomorrow.

Thing is, now your stoma is swollen and you'll need to take it easy and baby your stomach for a day or two.

After I PBed I took it extra easy on the tummy especially since it was twice in my first week post op (like I stayed on Clear Liquids longer for example). Before I got the band I was really nervous about PBing and also about how/if I would be able to tell it from reflux (I have bad reflux, things come back up), etc. Right before surgery I asked about that. My surgeon said not to worry about it too much that it was just part of adjusting to the band and we would work it out. (part of this I think was also my mom calling me before surgery and asking if I had made sure they knew how bad my GERD was and the history of it and how I spent the first year of my life sleeping sitting up because of it and so forth. Of course they did, and of course it isn't that bad now, etc).

I think the warning signs to look out for are throwing up for PBing multiple times a week, doing it for no reason whatso ever, not keeping liquids down, etc.

So take it easy. Liquids for a couple of days. THen mush. Then food. Call your doc if you feel you should.

After my first week though including two PB incidents (well one was really just throwing up) and one was definitely PB with lots of foam and they weren't really cocerned about it at my check up at all. We talked about it, of course, but it wasn't a big scarey thing like I had worried about.

Shesha, you are probably just sore from the PB. If you feel sore today move to liquids for a day. You are okay. I wouldn't worry about calling the surgeon. What you experienced is normal if you overextend yourself. Don't worry.

Thank you all for your replies. I feel much better now. I tried to take it easy today, but I think I'll do just liquids tomorrow. I am still feeling a tad sore.

This really sucks. I feel like I have a ticking time bomb in my stomach now. :)

Off to review the band rules....

I wouldn't worry too much. Your stomach is probably tired and sore from the PBing and that's why it hurts, but I wouldn't think there was any damage done to the band. Take it easy for the next 48 hours, try to have liquids and mushy food for a couple of days and when you restart with solid food pay attention to what type of food doesn't go down that well (asparagus can have lots of fibre).

Yes, I think I am just now "coming into my band" and finding out what works and what doesn't. It's just a fickle little thing. I just have to test the waters carefully, I guess. Thanks Again!

Shesa: I hope you are doing much better!!! I am still new to the website and I will be banded until May. Can you explain to me what PB is? I searched and searched trying to find out, but no luck.

Thanks,

LOL!!

Actually, Asparagus is one of those things I was told not to have post-op..and asparagus is my favorite veggie!! Actually, one of the only ones I like. If you looked in my cabinets, I have 10 cans of Asparagus.. and rice.

So.. I will miss it ::sniff::

You might still be able to eat it, each person is different.

I would guess that canned is better than fresh for a bandster but you won't know if it works for you until you try it.

Asparagus works - but only if you get the really young, thin stalks... and then cut them off about halfway up.

I love the stuff and refuse to give it up - but you have to get the most tender shoots and then chew them really well.

Good Luck and Happy Veggies...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
