Hi everyone! I've been overweight for quite sometime now and its only gotten worse since I quit smoking 6 yrs ago and the menopause decided to hit me. Ive done several dr supervised programs with minimal loss and decided it was time to take my life back. Im happiky married with 5 grown & married kuds and 18 grandkids. I love life itself. I started my journey for wls in October

2013 with Providence Weight Loss Center. Went thru all the classes and psyche eval. Saw my surgeon and was cleared to proceed. Insurance was filed or so I thought. Two weeks after all clear got a call that the program was being shut down. So im back to square one. I found a new surgeon and friend to restart my journey. Ill be attending seminar next week.

Welcome, sorry to hear about you having to start the journey from square one...atleast you already know what is expected of you and how to really get the best out of this journey. I had a setback when the surgery was first suggested to me, but it made me that much more determined to take my life & choices seriously. Best wishes to you

Welcome! I'm sorry you had to start back at square one, I know it can be frustrating. But, I found that in the time it took me to get where I'm at I've learned so very much. Take this extra time to learn even more about your new lifestyle and the nutritional changes that will happen.

There is a lot of support on this forum and we'll be here cheering you on. Good luck!!!

April

Welcome to the board, MJ! It must be frustrating to have to restart all over again, but the good thing is that you're determined to get this done, and start a new life. I wish you the best in your journey!

Thank you all for the encouragement. I'm ready to do this. I've been doing a lot of research the last couple of years and I've already started watching what I eat and journaling in my fitness pal.

MJ - I agree, your journey has been a challenge. But I like your commitment and know that will take you a long way. I have been very, very lucky. I am a band to sleeve revision, my surgeon suggested the surgery, and by some miracle, Medicare approved the band removal AND the sleeve. Amazing. Of course, they have lots of hoops to jump through, but It's very worth it and is only taking a little over a month (thanks to some pushing from my surgeon's office). Today I saw the Psych and took the 567 question MMPI, definitely the most ridiculous hurdle. I hadn't seen that instrument since grad school, and can't believe they are still using it. Unless you affirmatively answer questions that ask if you think often about suicide/cutting, etc, it's pretty hard to "flunk" this "test."

Anyway, it sounds like you MIGHT be of Medicare age (the 18 grandkids so indicate). If so, and you haven't checked on their coverage, don't give up on them.

My surgery is March 3, coming fast. Only made the decision a few weeks ago. It's a bigger eating pattern change than the band, but also more effective, according to almost everyone.

Good luck on your journey! (I wonder if there is a support group for "Senior Sleevers?"

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
