Type 1 diabetic looking into this surgery (need advice ♥)

Recommended Posts

Hi All...

Mandie, I am so sorry I fell off the face of the earth after my post. I posted that two days before my surgery. It feels like a lifetime ago and it hasn't even been a year!

The sleeve was the best thing I have ever done. I've never felt this good in my life! My a1c is down. Still not below 7 where I'd like to be but I've seen quite an improvement. I exercise regularly and am getting ready to participate in my first 5K. I feel like a "normal" person. It's just amazing what a difference the surgery has made in my life.

Mandie I would love to hear how you're doing.

Hi there! Thanks to all of you who have posted on this topic. It has been a huge help to me. I presented with type 1 diabetes as an adult and have ballooned since beginning insulin therapy about 3 years ago. My relationship to food has changed drastically and it just feels like a nuisance. I'd love to have less of a "need" to eat and am seriously considering the gastric sleeve. I can't afford one in the US and my insurance doesn't cover any WLS for anyone, so I have been looking at Mexico. Anyone on here Type 1 and had surgery in Mexico?

Best wishes and success to all of you!

Thanks for the reply :-D Do you wear a pump? If so, can I ask for more details about that and if you wore it during surgery? Also, were you charged more being higher risk with Dr. Corvala? Thanks in advance!

Yeah I wear a pump. No I took it off for the surgery and it was difficult trying to conrol my blood sugars. No I was charged his regular price. If you have any questions, feel free to message me on here and we can talk there :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
