Recommended Posts

Im a little thrown by the lack of preop testing ive had to undergo. I went to the hospital to get my blood drawn but all they did was take my history. I didnt have to do and preop EKG or Endoscopy. I meet with my surgeon tomorrow for surgery next week. I havnt seen my surgeon since November. Should I be concerned or does this sound normal? I have met with other from his office and took his preop class..so its not like he left me hanging. Just wanted to know if anyone else experienced a lack of preop tests before surgery

Sounds peculiar most insurances have pre op requirements. I'd call them and double check the requirements and make sure you're approved? I just read someone else's story where they're stuck with a $130k Bill.

Thats great advice, my sister actually had something similar happen to her. She was getting the lapband so the bill wasnt that high but she was stuck with 30k (several years ago). I called my insurance company and asked them to send me the approval by mail so I had a copy. The letter I have says we're all good! I would recommend that to everyone too

My insurance actually has less requirements then my surgeon. Insurance required 40+ BMI without comorbids, 35+ with comorbids, history of weight loss attempts, pcp approval, that's it. No pre-diets or extensive testing. My surgeon however requires the above, sleep study, pulmonary clearance, nutritional counselling and an EKG. The surgeon has contacted the insurance once already to inquire about requirements, they will submit the request for approval one I complete the surgeons requirements. My surgeons practice is considered to be a "Center of Excellence" so they tend to have higher restrictions however because of this they get quicker approvals from insurance.

If I were you Katt, I'd double check to make sure, better to be safe.

Good luck.

My surgeon is also part of a Center of Excellence, I read that a lot of surgeons have tge requirements that yours does which makes me even more curious as to why mine doesnt. When I see him tomorrow im going to ask him why I didnt need any of these tests. Anxious for the answer!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
