Hic ups, coughing, sneezing

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm 4 days post op. I keep my therapeutic pillow on hand. Yesterday I had to cough and it to oh over five minutes to get it out. Right now I had to sneeze, I felt it coming and grabbed my pillow, but I swear to goodness I felt like all of my insides ripped apart. Can you pop a stitch with a sneeze?

I suppose it's possible but not likely. It makes me hurt just reading your post. Thank goodness I went about 2 weeks without sneezing and I remember how much it hurt then. 4 days out, can't even imagine! I managed to go almost a week without coughing so I was lucky.

I'm sure you are ok but if you still feel a localized pain after a while, you may want to give your surgeon a call and ask.

Good luck to you. I know things suck right now, especially the first week post op but it will get better and better as time goes and you will LOVE your sleeve and your life post sleeve!

I know how you feel. The first sneeze hurt like hell and made me feel like I was ripping something. Coughing hurt the first week but now it's not hurting. As for hiccups, I get them when I am full and they hurt but not as bad as sneezing.

Thanks

I actually sneezed a second time and kinda wanted to die. Dramatic right? Anyways, I called the surgical nurses advice line, she assured me I felt a ripping sensation but actual ripping didn't occur. She said the stitches and cauterization are strong enough to survive sneezes.

I'm 15 days post-op, but I remember when I first sneezed more than 5 days ago. OUCH. Actually, I believe I sneezed and said OUCH at the same time! It hurt & I had similar thoughts. I also coughed a little bit a few days post op & was sooo careful coughing. It was like I had to clear my throat due to a post nasal drip or something so I keep clearing it very slowly & very carefully. It wasn't pleasant.

It does get better. When I sneeze now, it's not bad at all. I can feel it a little bit but not at all like I used to. It no longer hurts.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
