After the surgery...how do you get the right nutrition?

Recommended Posts

How can one possibly get enough Protein, carbs and veggies PLUS fluids with 1 cup 3 times a day? I am getting worried about this. Surgery is in 4 days!!!

You don't get the recommended amount right after surgery. Your stomach is swollen and it's impossible. My doctor told me to concentrate on staying hydrated...the Protein will come later.

Ask your doctor about his/her guidlines after surgery.

Easy! You don't. Hydration should be your number one concern. Water and Powerade zero for the first few days. Depending on your surgeon, you can probably have Protein shakes shortly after if you need them. sugar free Popsicles were my saving grace for the first few days after surgery!

So important-- if it's a choice, always choose Water over food!!

Hi,

Yes, my doctor also told me to concentrate on staying hydrated. I was concerned about getting Protein in at first , but my doctor said just worry about not getting dehydrated. I worked the Protein in slowly. Everyone has a different experience, some people are able to drink with no problem, others (like me) struggled. What has been interesting is reading on here about doctors different food stages and how their patient's can progress to them.

Good luck with your surgery! You're almost to "the other side" lol.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
