My doctor has scheduled my surgery as a same day procedure, is this common? I had to switch surgeons due to insurance reasons and my old surgeon was keeping me over night but the new one isnt? Some input please......

It is not common but I went home the same day and my surgery didn't start until 1. As long as you can pee, drink and walk you should be fine. As always if something needs further monitoring they can always keep you. Good luck!

I would not have been able to go home that day. Are you having a leak test? What does your post op diet plan look like?

I am pre-op/self-pay, the two surgeons and their respective surgical centers I am currently considering have both stated possible same day outpatient, assuming no surprises. They did say that if my BMI is 50 or higher that it would be in a hospital with at least one night (also more $$). My BMI is 48 or so...

I do believe they are doing a leak test. My post op diet is clears for one week then I introduce food as I feel my body can handle it.

Both options for me include a leak test as well, both packages are nearly identical, all the pre- and post nutrition and medical plus support groups. It will come down the surgeon I am most comfortable with...

My cardiologist made the call. She wanted me monitored for two nights in the hospital. Still, one day would have been rough.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
