Water or ice in recovery?

Recommended Posts

I've had a few surgery and I always come out with a parched throat and dry mouth. Are we allowed to have ice chips in recovery? I'll double check with my team but just wondered your experiences.

I had the gastric sleeve. I was not allowed anything at all by mouth until the next day after my leak test, upper gi X-ray. Then I was allowed fluids.

I wasnt able to have ANYTHING from midnight sunday, surgery was monday. Mouth and throat were extremely dry when I came out, and same thing.... absolutely nothing to eat or drink until I had the swallow test tuesday am.

I was allowed to sip Water, I was told to sip, sip, sip to keep hydrated. You might want to bring Chap Stick that helps.

Probably depends on your surgeon. Mine does a leak test in the OR. So I'm assuming when you wake up you start fluids. Guess I will know for sure on Tuesday.

Mine said something about a leak test in the OR....I meet with him on the 23rd and I'll ask him about it. There was so much info to digest on my first visit that I didn't catch everything. I'm very hard of hearing and I have to bring my bf to all my appointments and he relays the parts I don't hear. I'll ask him and see what he said. I sure Hope I can have sips or ice chips but either way I'm not going to complain. I'm just grateful to be having this done. :-)

I checked and my doctor does the leak test before a person leaves the OR.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
