Anyone have an open RNY?

Recommended Posts

I will be having an open rny and would like to know how long did it take you to fully recover? How did you feel the 1st few days? How long were you in the hospital? And anything else you can tell me that will help! Thanks!

I would like to know this also.

I was worried to death about this but did get my mind put at rest about it. I believe it might be a little longer for recuperation....a little extra care with the incision...and if you work a bit more time off is required.

All the best

Xx

Good question! I am also havin an open rny. Initially I was told I would be in the hospital 5-7 days then when I talked to the nurse this week she said I could be out in 3. They also told me I would not be able to do any heavier work over 10lbs for 6-8 weeks. I am a FP with 3 small boys and my own 8 yr old. I have booked a respite provider to help me for 4 weeks. Hoping I will be able to take over then.

I had an open RNY back in the day. I thought most bypass surgery was done Laparoscopically. I'm sure your surgeon has a reason. Did he explain why he isn't operating Laparoscopically ?

For me it was because of scar tissue from 3 other surgeries. The 3 were all done laparoscopic. It would be nice if the surgeon changes his mind on the morning of surgery lol

I am having open because of other surgeries and scar tissue also. They are just going to use the scar I already have which is really long. I am really nervous and wanting to know how long post op pain lasts. Can anyone give me info any insight as to how their pain was? I know everyone's pain is different...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
