Question about shakes!

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Juliana and I'm about 4 weeks out of surgery and have a quick question regarding Protein shakes! I know meal sizes are supposed to be 4 oz but I was wondering if anyone knew how much a meal of liquid was allowed to be. The reason I ask is because I don't get completely full off of 4 oz of pure liquid anymore like I did the first week. So does anyone have any idea the average amount of ounces a Protein Shake should be to be considered a meal? Thanks!! (I'm really hoping it's not 4 lol)

I had 8 oz when I drank Protein Shakes. It took me about an hour to drink it though!

liquids only stay in your stomach about 5 minutes. It's normal to be able to drink the full 8 ounces at 4 weeks out. At 8 months out I can finish an 8 ounce shake in about 3 minutes or less.

After you are on solid food, a shake will work better as a snack than a meal. They are great for Breakfast if you aren't a big Breakfast eater.

I was worried too and I'm only supposed to have 2 oz and I'm 8 weeks out...but I asked my surgeon bc I seem to be able to gulp without even thinking and was worried I was messing everything up, he said nope this is normal bc your tummy is a sleeve and especially depending on how vertical the portion is that remains it may nearly go straight through you! No worries! My bet is if you are in mushies or when you can start adding some dense Proteins you will be full must faster! I still am barely able to finish two oz, so for example I am supposed to have 4TBSP of food(yes 2oz) so last night I had 2TBSP Taco Ground Beef(heated) then topped it with 2 TBSP Cottage cheese, so all Protein and I had to stop with one to two small bites left. If it was Greek yogurt it woulda gone down super easy. Hope that helps some!

I've discovered over the past few days that it's best for me to stick to about 8 oz shakes for a meal for now because it seems to be doing the trick! Thank you for your help all!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
