How long were you out of work

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I know everyone is different, but how long were you out of work for or how long did the surgeon tell you to take off!

I'm a vet tech and I scheduled my surgery so I would have 10 days off, but it didn't work out that way. I was back doing light work/short days starting Day 6, and full time back at day 14. Still have to make myself not lift more than 20pounds because I feel fine. (Ok, so I lifted a 50 pound dog today) but luckily my lifting restriction is for only 2 more days.

Like so many things we talk about, I think everyone is different. My doc said 2 weeks off, yet I knew he gave my friend 4 weeks off for the same surgery two years ago. Both of us had a hernia repair with the sleeve. We both work in an office and do not have to lift anything. At the end of 2 weeks I worked for 2 days and called the doctor's office because I was so tired I could not function (very high stress job). I was still sleeping 10-11 hours per night and when I work I only get about 6 or 7 due to commute, length of work day, etc. Doc gave me 4 more days off and that worked out much better.

My husband and I own our own business and -- aside from 2 nights in a hotel in a Mexico after release from the hospital-- I really didn't take any time off.

I had my gallbladder removed, too. The one adjustment I made was I laid down every day by about 5:30 pm and didn't do much in the evenings (usually I wouldn't get tired till 10pm or so, but right after the sleeve a weariness would hit me every day about 5pm and I could not buzz around my house and do laundry, sweep, etc.).

My surgeon was really fast (completes most sleeve surgeries in about 30-35 minutes), so I wasn't under very long. I think this (and the fact that his practice doesn't employ narcotic painkillers outside of the recovery room) helped me feel alert and back-to-normal pretty quickly. SWELLING -- I think I'm still a little swollen, but there was a significant drop after 6 weeks.

Best wishes!

I'm going back tomorrow. I was off 6 weeks and am very grateful I was able to take the time to adjust and concentrate on healing, eating appropriately, drinking and working out.

I took 2 weeks off only because of the drainage tube. I would have went back earlier if it came out before.

I had surgery on Wednesday and returned to my office on Monday. I do work close to home so I was comfortable to drive.

I was out of work two days: the day of the surgery and one day after that. I returned to work much faster than I was told I would.

I took 6 weeks only becasue my work approves me for 6 weks with pay. Could have come back after 2 weeks but it was best to follow doctors orders.

Two weeks and couldn't wait to get back. Until I went back. Could have used an extra week but my job is fairly demanding

I was back 6 days after.. luckily, my co-workers treated me like a delicate flower when I got back lol so I didn't have to do a lot of moving around.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
