Hi everyone!! I'm going in for psych eval and first appointment with surgeon next Monday!! So excited! One question; I have recently been experiencing more heartburn and some nausea and am worried about the scope. If the scope does show an ulcer or something will that prevent me from having the sleeve done? Delay? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi irockedthe80s,

First welcome to BariatricPal. Congratulations on your visit to your surgeon and your decision to have surgery.

There are several members who have had heart burn before or after surgery. I was one of them. I had it from a prolapsed lapband. Since I have had my sleeve surgery, I have had zero heartburn. Another reason could be you have a hiatal hernia. If you do have one, your surgeon will repair it during surgery. Even if your scope does not show a hernia, your doctor will check for one during your surgery. If you have an ulcer, your doctor will prescribe meds to help it heal prior to your surgery. Wait and see what the scope reveals, if anything, before worrying about delays to your surgery.

Are you currently on any medicine to prevent heartburn? If not, you might ask your primary care doctor or your bariatric doctor for a prescription. If he prescribes something and it does not give you relief, don't be afraid to ask for something different. Sometimes one prescription does not work as well as another.

I had my first surgeon visit and psych eval on the same day also.

Good uck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
