Recommended Posts

For those of you who did a Protein shake preop diet (whether is was only shakes and Water, or shakes and one meal) can you tell me how long you were on that diet and how much weight you lost in that time frame?

Just curious mostly...THANK YOU!!!!

I lost about 18 pounds on my pre-op diet.

My pre-op diet included 2 shakes and 1 meal (4-6 ounces of Protein an a vegetable).

Some have pre-op diets that require weight loss, mine did not, I had to follow this plan for 2 weeks.

Good luck to you!

I was on my pre op 14 days and had 2-3 shakes, broth, and an occasional pudding cup. I lost only 8 lbs. and then gained exactly 8 lbs. in the hospital.

It took a few days, but yes, it came back off. It is all the IV fluids they give you.

I started mine two days ago. :-( I have not been doing too good...Im only supposed to have the shakes and I've been hungry. I've decided on my own to have two shakes and one meal. I'm still eating less than I used to so I'm hoping I lose some weight. The head hunger is no joke, It makes me wonder if I'll be successful after the operation. January 13 hurry up and get here, because I feel like I want to eat the world. :(

As you can tell we are all so different, given different diet plans, different shakes, we lose weight, we gain weight in the hospital. That being said, I say relax and do your best. We had a doctor who did not seem so strict as others here, and I worried about that, that he was shake his finger and say you did not follow the diet! So no surgery! But everything went perfect, just perfect, and fell into place. Happy New Year!!!!!

I'm scheduled for the 7th of Jan.... my doc has advised me 1pc of either chicken or fish a day with Soups, green vegetables & skimmed milk/yoghurt. I did hear him say 'no' to natural sugars from fruits but not so sure! Could someone pls advice if natural fruits/juices are allowed on the pre-op diet. lunch, dinner isn't so much of a problem as Breakfast is! Any ideas on how to cope in the mornings? I don't get shakes, powders, etc where I live!

You can order online, the Premier Protein shakes, SF Torani syrups (all flavors, and in the grocery stores), and even EAS Protein powder can be ordered from Walmart online. But since you are having surgery January 7, how about yogurt for breakfast? Beef or chicken bouillion is great for the hunger pains, even for breakfast. Have you prepared for after surgery, and gotten your shakes, FF Soups and items ready for the after surgery diet?

Thanks.... But I'm not in the US! :)

For Breakfast I'm doing a cup of tea + half boiled eggs or oats cooked in milk with a teaspoon of honey. Is that ok?

Have no idea what's in store for me post op! :P I've heard patients simply pulverize chicken broth & veggies & survive on them for the first month

Where are you? We are certainly blessed here to have everything at our fingertips almost. I am wondering if your doctor or hospital has given you guidelines to go by, as far as eating. If not I hope the rest of us can help you the best we can. I hope you have access to bouillion or chicken broth, especially after surgery, or make your own broth, just chill after cooking and take the fat off.

Honestly I cannot having the surgery without all the reading material on eating that we have had here. Which surgery will you be having?

I hope you can find someone through your doctor or hospital who has had this surgery because you need good support.

It will be about 3-4 weeks after surgery before you can eat pureed or minced foods, so Soups will be on your diet. Refried Beans are wonderful, to eat alone in small amounts or to make Soups with, using fat free chicken broth and seasonings. Best of luck!

I prefer to make my own broth/soup at home. It's pretty easy - just dump all the ingredients you want with the chicken into a pressure cooker & forget about it! That way it comes out tasting the way you prefer it to be!

I'm guessing post op will be more or less the same thing - just pulverised after I debone the meat. U think I've got it right?

PS: I thought I was posting on the pre-op gastric sleeve section of this forum

You are under gastric sleeve section. You will not be able to eat veggies or chicken/meats right away, maybe pureed 3-4 weeks out. Keep posting, there is help here. Best of luck!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
