Gastrectomies are not new

Recommended Posts

General surgeons have been performing total and partial gastrectomies for cancer patients and people w/digestive issues for decades....Why is the wls community telling everyone there is no long-term records of patients living w/ partial or no stomach at all???

I dreaded telling a friend what I was planning since she lost the remainder of her stomach when the cancer returned.

I thought she would tell me not to destroy a healthy stomach. She has, actually, been very supportive as she knows my struggles.

Actually, knowing what she was able to eat before with 40% of her stomach and what she can eat now with none has been very helpful.

I think the reason partial is not used for comparison as they have to remove the damaged bits which may not be the same as that removed in WLS so hard for comparison since hormone centres etc are specific to area.

and with no stomach, its a lot more extreme than even Gastric Bypass - she suffers from dumping after everything she eats however healthful.

I don't think they mean they have no long term research on patients living with partial stomachs. I think the research they are lacking is the long term weight loss goals relating to the sleeve.

Merry Christmas

One of the reasons I decided to go through this surgery other than the need fire permanent weight loss was that my father had half of his stomach removed 35 years ago due to ulcers and lost weight and never gained it back. Which helped me to know some of the hills and Valleys.

Which I used when I thought I had done the wrong thing.

This is true about the partial gastrectomies however I believe we have more info on vsg just from the collected data from other partial gastrectomies than lap band but it isnt marketed that way. VSG is kind of presented like they have absolutely no idea what complications might arise past 10 yrs.. but its not true. Lapband seems more like the experimental surgery.

Sorry about your friend. ..I couldn't imagine not having a stomach...if I dumped after everything I ate id be miserable. .I wonder if a gtube would help idk.

I wonder about the stress reducing the stomach causes on other organs like gall bladder, pancreas, and liver.

I actually researched partial and total gastrectomies while looking into VSG. There's plenty of data out there concerning long term complications and outcomes. Even though these surgeries weren't performed for weight loss purposes, I'm not sure why the WLS community hasnt tapped into this resource to better inform potential patients. I know the long term studies help me make my decision.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
