What are you eating (drinking) one week post-op

Recommended Posts

I'm already sick of the post-op liquid diet and my surgery was this past Monday the 16th of December. How is everyone else coping and what are you drinking?

My surgery was Monday also. The first 3 days were awful. I didn't even want food. Yesterday I made a roast in the crockpot for my family. I had 3 sips of the beef broth from the roast and veggies. It was delicious. I can't tell you how amazing it tasted. However, it went straight through me. It didn't hurt my stomach bc I ate very little, but I have had the runs ever since. I'm eating Popsicles and drinking Powerade zero and that's about it. I just keep telling myself I will be skinny. I'm going to work today on light duty, then I'll be off the next week and a half, I'm a teacher. I just hope I stay no hungry like I am now.

First advice - follow your doc's orders. Everyone's post-op orders are different.

The shakes get old really fast - and it's not getting better for me. I'm 5 weeks post op and still drink 3 per day in order to get adequate Protein in. But, it is what it is - it's what I have to do. Here are some of my strategies for shakes:

Try heating one up - especially the chocolate, it will taste like hot chocolate. (Nice treat around Christmas time)

Try sugar free flavored syrups - there are a lot of varieties out there. (The peppermint in the hot chocolate is awesome)

PB2 (powdered peanut butter) was allowed for me - a tablespoon in a vanilla or chocolate shake is excellent

If you're allowed yogurt or Greek yogurt, add a couple of tablespoons

Add some sugar free pudding mix - it doesn't take a lot, maybe 2-3 teaspoons to add flavor. Lemon is surprisingly good in a vanilla shake, I also just tried pistachio...I was surprised

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury makes an unflavored Protein powder - this is good to put into broth (again, if you're allowed) or add to another Protein Drink for an added Protein boost

I just ordered some Health Wise hot chocolate mix - while they are lower in protein (15 grams vs. 20 grams), it is a nice change and it mixes better into hot Water.

Best of luck to you!

Sleeved the 16th and on clear liquids only until Monday then I can add in Protein Shakes for one week. No puréed foods for me until week 3. I think every doctor is different.

Congrats to you on your Surgery!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
