I am going to coming up on a seminar and 1st surgeon visit. I am making a list of question to ask in case it's not covered and I don't leave the appts wishing I had remembered. With that being said, is there anything you wished you had asked or find to be very important to ask for a potential WLS candidate. I am not one just just jump in head first before I make a drastic decision unless I feel well informed. So I would like to have all my bases covered. Help this worry wart! ;)

Ask about:

Complications

General success rate (from surgery)

% of excess fat / weight lost

Pre-op requirements

NUT and medical support before and after...

I'd also ask how many surgeries your surgeon has done.

It depends. What research have you done so far?

Well, I guess you could say I know the general concept of the VSG. I have been lurking around this app for about 3 months. And was doing web searches for about a year, anything related to WLS. But what I find to be the hardest is every Doc/nut is different, for example one of my question that I have written down is rather or not my surgeon places a drain. If he does I don't think I will mind just I feel as though I will have to mental prepare myself. A lot of my concerns are based around my kids. I have 3. With 2 3 and 9 years old. I am concerned about( assuming my surgery goes relatively smooth) how long until I am able to pick my children up. As in like life over in beds and assist with potty duties and bathing.

I guess really what I am saying is, is there anything that you didn't ask or forgot to ask, and then you were surprised when something arouse.

I maybe be over analyzing this and just see where the cards fall. Thank you for all the responses, ;)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
