Disappointed With Weight Loss

Every day when I wake up I make a promise to myself to be committed to working my band and my body in most healthy and happy way I can today.

I do this first thing before my feet even hit the floor. I take a second and stretch out (sometimes I'm so stressed I sleep in a tense little ball and I need a good stretch just to get out of bed)

While I'm stretching sometimes I rub my port as if it were Aladdin's lamp, because for me it is. There is no magic Genie that's gong to pop out and grant me three wishes, but knowing that my band is there to support me I know that I have the power to make my dreams and wishes come true if I want them.

Yes I know I sound like a cliche but it works for me and it helps remind me that I have come this far and I will not go back the way I came.

When I'm hungry I eat, I think about what I am going to eat before I allow it to pass my lips. I think about what I am drinking before I take a sip. I think about how long I am sitting today and if I have moved enough and I get up and take a walk even if it's around the office or to the potty and back.

I tell myself that am successful every single day, even when I make mistakes. I am successful because I am mindful and for me that is more then half the battle won!

I know how you are feeling.. I am struggling some.. BUT... I know for me.. is excerise... My surgeon is a super guy and wouldn't change anything I have doneor accomplished in the last 3 years. and he stresses... "you must keep up with your exercising" But again, I say I am stuggling and it is because I have gotten somewhat lazy! I have slacked off the exercising.. I joined Curves and LOVED it.. the bad thing is.. I didn't quit it.. it closed here in our little town. Is that an excuse? No, but Yes I have been trying to make it that!.. So I have promised myself now right before the holidays is not the time to try something new... But after they are over I am back at it!.. We have a full gym at my place of employment that is FREE for us to use so like I said... I have been trying to make Curves closing my excuse.. and it is a bad one. I have lost 75lbs and thrilled!!! But have not met my personal goal.. 50 more.. I do feel good but know I would feel much better when I start my exercising again! And get to my goal... I should say clothing size.. that is what I am working for.. everyone carries their weight different and I know if I can get around another 50lbs off I would be at that size..

So I say to you, be strong, do this for you, YOU can do it!!! I don't know you but am proud that you took this step for you!! You have really made a difference for me reading these posts made me think about me and I have to get back on track and do this for me!! That is why I started my journey and I have to stay on it for me.. no one else!!

I love this post. I especially relate to the idea of being mindful...mindful in a positive way. Dieting without the lapband, I was mindful, but in a frustrated and deprived way...mindful of how hungry I was and how much I hated giving up this or that.

The lapband has given me so much peace around how I eat.

Not your fault. A recent study suggests that the band isn't terribly effective (fails 44% of the time). Hang in there!

Ok, CoffeeGrin,

Before you make comments on how BAD the lap band is, please make sure that you KNOW how your Sleeve works long term...

I could post MANY cited articles on the Sleeve and how it DOES NOT WORK for everyone even when removing most of stomach but why would I start up unnecessary arguments. Also I have MANY friends with the Sleeve, who are NOT at goal, never made goal and MANY have regained their weight.

I also have a sister with a "sleeved liked stomach" she has a partial gastrectomy and old stomach stapling and has regained all of her weight and have many health problems...so don't be so quick to bash the band when you've NOT had your Sleeve surgery - yet, and don't really know what you are getting into.

Once you get your Sleeve, you will realize it is ONLY a tool just like the Lap Band, RNY and ANY other weight loss surgery.

I didn't read all the posts here but I read your comment regarding stomach growls and your interpretation that these meant you are hungry? That's just something most of us used as an excuse to eat again. Read this article. It may help you understand how your digestive system works.

I was banded May 2013 lost weight prior and right after surgery but now have put it back on as well, not all of it but close. Very disappointed and hate the way my doctor acts towards me so si have not gone back since sept, I just not sure if it is all me or the band has slipped, wish I knew if it has slipped or not

Only a doctor could know. Sorry, but you may have to face the bad doctor one more time?

Hi. I was banded in Sept 2011. Started out at 224 lbs and am now 210. That's right, i havent lost much weight in the 2+ yrs that i've had the band. I have an 11 cc band and already have 10.2 cc filled.

I don't think i need to be filled anymore because i do feel restriction after a small amount of food but it doesn't last long and i am able to eat more within 5-10 minutes of feeling the restriction.

I admit i havent been making such great food choices all the time but it seems easier to get down the foods that are not so good for me, than the foods i'm supposed to be eating. I have no problems with bread, Bagels, Pasta, etc but i do have to eat slowly.

I've kind of given up here......

Have you had a barium swallow recently? My first surgeon would do barium swallows to check band placement (and he reported there was nothing wrong, the band was in the correct placement and had not slipped)....but my new surgeon did them to also check the function. What was discovered by the radiologist, who looked for specific functioning aspects as he took pictures, was that my band had migrated up. I had no small pouch! I could eat just about anything, including bread. I felt restriction, but about 10 minutes later I could eat more.

I didn't have any symptoms I've heard described for a band "slip".

Anyway, I wanted to mention it to you since what you describe sounds familiar to me.

Dont give up! Just give up the bread, bagels, Pasta, etc. and see if the weight starts to fall off again. And the next time you see your doctor, you might ask about a band function test.

It sounds to me from your brief description is that you need to get to the core of WHY you are putting slippery, high calorie foods in your pouch. We all have to come out of sleepwalking through life and denial tand accept that we are food addicts. Seek a good therapist to help fix your head before you go and have another surgery. He/she will help you discover why you are sabbotaging your band and weight loss in general, if you are brave enough to go down this path. Were you truly ready for this surgery at this point in your life? Did you do it for the right reasons?

Hell, we all can be drinking milkshakes, eating cheesecake, and creme brule and blame the band for not restricting our minds from making bad choices. Your reliance upon the band to fix your head is a fallacy. Our heads made us fat, it is our head that needs healing.

I found a wonderful therapist in 2010 and I still seek sessions every few months. We are food addicts/ food abusers and will always be one. Have you ever thought of Overeaters Anonymous or something similar? Drinking alcohol is another easy way to keep weight on. What are you trying to stuff in your pouch to fill your soul? You gotta take the effort and figure it out. Best of luck and keep on trying. The food part will easily come once you resolve your psychological issues.

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
