has your surgeon given you a handbook yet? and have you seen the nut? every surgeon is different but they usually give you a general guideline for post op eating. immediatley after you will be on Clear liquids. i was not allowed anything but Water, Jello and broth until i had my 1 week post op checkup, after that i was told i could move on to full liquids, which then you can start incorprating the Protein shakes i believe. then your diet will continue to progress.

where are you from? where are you having your surgery done? :) ttys

I would verify with your nutritionist and/or surgeon because everyone's post op diet seems to vary. Protein shakes, broth, Water and sugar-free popsicles were my post-op diet per my surgeon's plan. Some people are on "clears" the first week, but I was just on "liquids only" for 2 weeks before switching to mushies.

Are Protein shakes considered apart of the diet for the first week? Or is it like just broth?

Jls93001

broth, Water, popsicles are what people usually drink the first week

the most important thing is to stay hydrated :)

you must push yourself to drink, and drink and then drink some more

take slow sips, sllllllow :)

drinking above liquids the first week and a bit is more important than getting in all your protein

many people /ME - can't tolerate the shakes the first week

tummy can't hold it keep it down

after a while/soon Protein will be very important in your new life

the expression is protein first (dense protein like chicken to me is the best because it keeps me full longer)

I can see the determination in your eyes B)

you will do great :)

good luck with WLS :)

speedy recovery ;)

Hopeliveshere I am from Baltimore and I will be having it done at GBMC by Dr. Liao on feb 4th. I'll be 21 on January 31st so I'm guessing any drinks are out ? I have 1 last class to take on January 20th where I can ask any last minute questions but I am so anxious to know in advance, so thanks for all of the help and advice

Same here. I did Clear Liquids for 2- 3 days after and then full liquids for 2 weeks, pureed foods for a week, soft foods for 2 weeks, then slowly incorporated regular foods.

Every surgeon is different. Mine said this about post op diet:

  • Weeks 1 & 2 = full liquids (anything you can get through a straw - but don't use straws bec they can increase gas);
  • Weeks 3 & 4 = soft foods (anything you can mash with a fork)
  • Starting week 5, no more restrictions

My post-op instructions are full liquids beginning Day 1, meaning first day home from the hospital. This includes Protein Shakes, all the clear liquids, SF Jello, yogurt, pudding, etc. I'm one week post-op now, and I've had zero trouble taking in all of my Water and required Protein. I don't have a check-up until 2 weeks post-op. Beginning week 3, move to puréed and soft foods for 9 weeks (according to provided list of idea foods, but no specific instructions on how to progress through the foods).

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
