Why Am I So Hungry?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved just a week ago and everything went smooth. I went back to work yesterday and although my energy level is low, I'm getting through it pretty well. My biggest issue is that I am HUNGRY all the time. This liquid stage is killing me, I need something else to satisfy or I'm going to pull my hair out. I'm definitely not going to cheat or disobey the direction of my doctor but I wish I didn't feel hunger like most people. So many kept saying "you won't be hungry" yet, I feel I can eat a big fat cheeseburger. Did anyone else feel this way? I'm on liquids until 12/17 and I'm PRAYING I make it.

I am hungry a lot too! I am 6 weeks out and my NUT looked at me like I was crazy but I do get hungry. I wonder if it is because I don't eat enough. Sometimes I worry that its because something went wrong and surgery was just a prank lol.

Yes, I think maybe I'm not eating enough. I mean I'm only a week out and I keep thinking "did I actually have surgery" lol.

I have read in other posts on this site that hunger like you describe could be remedied by starting, or increasing the dose of, a PPI - proton pump inhibitor. Those are the meds like Prilosec, Tagamet, etc. that reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. As with every medication change, though: ASK YOUR SURGEON BEFORE YOU DO IT.

I felt hunger at the beginning (and still do). But a PPI (prilosec) did help it somewhat.

Hi Monis!

I posted something similar recently because I thought I was the only one who was experiencing hunger after being sleeved. A few people replied saying that they also feel hunger. But then I increased how much liquid I was "eating" and have been feeling MUCH better.

I don't know what liquids you are allowed, but the liquids I increased were protien shakes and Soups. I bought some low fat cream of chicken and put it in the blender with Water (before heating) and it was like night and day. And this morning I put some drinkable yogurt in my protien shake and that make it more filling.

I take prilosec daily. 40 mg and at times I feel like I'm starving. I'm 5 wks out.

Oh, I had this same issue! I also thought that my sleeve did not "take" because so many say they are never hungry, but I was constantly hungry! But, I also had a bit of pain when I would even have my Protein drink, which is why I had liquid Vicodin for when I got home. That helped a lot, when I had it just prior to my "meals" and did not have to deal with the pain. I'm only 2 months out now, and venturing into some new foods, but it still does not go down easy, tho I am told it gets easier! After my first week, my Dr gave me permission to get some canned Soups and heat them up and puree them in the blender! This was like heavenly to me! It really kept me satisfied, and I could buy different flavors to change it up. As time went on, my husband got the idea to make our own soups so that I could get more Protein in them, and he would get a whole chicken in it, but my servings were always pureed! Man, it was so good! I started feeling like I was being nourished! We put lots of good veggies into it as well, everything cooked real soft, but I still needed to puree it so that I could eat it. I would only get about a quarter of a cup down me in the very beginning, but as the weeks went by, I was able to do a whole cup. Homemade Soup is just such a comfort, if you have the strength to make it or have someone who can make it for you! I wish you well on your journey!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I actually fell asleep which is why I am just responding, lol. I plan on calling my surgeon tomorrow to discuss a PPI and I also plan I'm upping my Protein. Thanks again and I will keep you updated.

Once you start eating more solid dense Protein your hunger will most likely go away.

Very easy to mix up gas with hunger, new born baby's of it all the time. Hence eating too much and puking x

No confusion, it was definitely HUNGER. Lol

I was sleeved Monday and I have the same thing. I have Prilosec that I'm supposed to take for 90 days. I haven't been able to driink my Protein shakes yet, but am hoping they will help. It's a weird hunger, because when I'm faced with the food it doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm having a hard time keeping up with my clears to stay hydrated. So I'm hungry and don't want to eat. LOL. I'm going to try some Protein shake now, lets see if it settles.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
