On Monday I will find out if i'm approved for the sleeve. They made my surgery date January 17. My only issue is that i'm a college student and during that time I will be taking a class that i'm only allowed two absences. If I get the surgery over the weekend (friday morning), I wonder, would I be able to attend class by monday? unfortunately I can't take the semester off because I'm literally one class away from graduating and my insurance told me i'm only approved for that week. I don't know what to do.

Oh boy that's a hard one... So just one class that's it? Umm.. It could be possible.. I mean I've seen some people feel pretty chipper in a few days after surgery.. I couldn't do it though. I felt like poop for a week..

Eh...that's a hard one. Speak with the professor and your admission office in certain circumstances where hospitalization is required they tend to be more lenient.

I am with Need2be...

OR, have someone take you to class (drive) and pick you up from class? If it's not a lab it might be doable. All that said, sometimes folks feel fine early. I felt OK, but was tired!

I agree with Laura-Ven. I see some people back to their desk job in less than a week. But, for me I felt weak for a few weeks. It's Major surgery. But Everyone recovery was different. Talk to your physician. I'm so glad I had my Surgery. Yay Good luck!

I was approved for surgery in August of this year but I just started a new position at work and didn't want to take off yet so I pushed it back and was recently sleeved. Is there away you can delay it until spring break to allow yourself time to recoup a little? I know you may not want to but unfortunately you do not know how your body will react to the procedure so you should allow yourself some time.

Definitely talk to your professor. I am a professor and if a student told me they needed to miss some extra classes for surgery, I would be fine with that as long as we could come up with a plan to make sure they were back on track soon and keeping up with readings etc. Be ready to offer a note from your surgeon or the hospital with your surgery date. I wouldn't require that (unless I already knew the student was having problems with the class, a tendency to blow things off, etc.) but some professors might.

I'm in school as well, but I was able to schedule surgery right before a summer class that was held online instead of face to face, like we usually do. I checked the calendar & MLK's birthday is January 20th, so maybe your school won't have classes that day. If your class is a Monday-Wednesday schedule, you might not have to go back til Wednesday, so check the academic calendar. You might still not be allowed to drive that soon after surgery, but hopefully you could at least be able to show up & sit through class.

Thank you everyone! My school is extremely strict and this is a 6 week class. I think you're all right, I need to speak to my doctor to figure out what I can do. =]

You may ask for an incomplete and it should be granted as long as you present your hospital paperwork. I did it and was approved. I now have until the end of spring semester. I will not need all that time but it's nice to know your given ample time.

I'm shocked that your school will not allow a longer absence for medical reasons. Is there a process by which you can ask for an extension for coursework/exams or a deferral?

My school is pure evil lol. they literally told us if we get hit by a car and end up in the hospital that still wont excuse an absence. I don't start class until the January 9th but I will look into what I can do. =]

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
