Non-Supportive Parents

Recommended Posts

I have been keeping my weight loss surgery a secret from everybody, and its been very hard especially through holidays. I cant eat solid foods yet, and every get together is surrounded by food. I have been pretending to eat and when no one is looking I spit in napkin, and shovel the rest on my husbands plate. This has caused a lot of pain, spitting up, and it sucks. My husband and mom are the only ones that know. Had to tell my mom because she needed to dogsit for us. She grilled me, and stressed me out even more, and so I would rather not share my journey with those closest to me, because they stress mr out. I just want to come out of the closet with it, so there is not so much presssure. Why are you not eating, you need to try this etc. Sometimes I pretend to be sick, then people are concerned because I have already lost 27 lbs in 3 weeks. Family and friends are so quick to judge, I feel like I have to keep this a secret as well. Maybe oneday I will tell everyone, but for now I am stuck.

I kept it a secret until I had my surgery date and there was no turning back. I did my research and when my parents had their doubts, I had the knowledge to back up my decision. Ultimately they are just wanting to protect me as their child (even though I'm 32 lol). I would do the same for my daughter. I had my surgery as planned, only told my husband,my step daughter, and my parents. After the surgery I told my friends and family. When they saw my happiness and success, my parents supported my decision. Do it for YOU. It's your happiness and health.

If you are still on your parent's insurance...you may be covered for weight loss surgery. Check on that first. You are a 22 year old woman and if you want to pursue WLS, then that is your prerogative. Your parents love you and when they see you are hell bent to follow through on this road, I am sure they will then support you. Parents do not want their children to go through any crisis alone... they will eventually get on board. As for self pay.... you are old enough to get a loan if you have a job. Look at all of your options before you decide anything, Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
