Hi I am Alice, I have a BMI of 34.3 and I was just wondering what is the minimum BMI required to have certain surgeries? I know different surgeons have different rates but I want to have an idea as to the general saying.

I am hoping to go for surgery in the New Year. I have looked up a few surgeons but still browsing

Thanks

General guidelines call for a BMI of 40 or greater OR 35 with one or more comorbidities. Most insurance companies usually use those guidelines and part of the decision process on coverage.

I was sleeved 11/26/13 with a BMI of 31. Even as self-pay, I was an exception due to my co-morbidities of diabetes, hypertension, and everything that goes with obesity. My surgeon evaluated my situation, and said he is in agreement with eliminating co-morbidities before they eliminate you. Many people said I looked great and did not understand why a 5'9", size 12, Zumba fanatic would do this. I was 280 pounds 25 years ago, fighting co-morbidities, swinging up and down in 40 pound increments. I have about 25 pounds to go, but if my body won't go there, I have a tool that I take very seriously. This is the last time I lose 40 pounds. I'm never going back.

Depends on if you're self pay or wanting insurance to pay. For me, for insurance to pay min was 35 with a comorbid condition. I had high cholesterol. Never took meds for it but it was documented/officially diagnosed. I think the band is FDA approved down to 30 BMI. Just need to find a surgeon for it. For your height, how many pounds till you're up to 35? I know I had to be careful not to really lose much during my mandatory 3 month diet to stay above 35 BMI.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
