Tolerable in about 3 days...two weeks before it was comfortable!

The surgery and associated byproducts are all distant memory now (6 mos. out)...hang on and get ready for one heck of a ride! :)

About 3 weeks for me, and I had lots of back pain from laying in the same position. That was one of the worst parts for me.

able to sleep on your sides again?!!!

a_gray_

i can never sleep on my back

by the 3rd night it was "ok" to sleep on my side

it gradually improved each night

it was kindof like a headache

it was really bad, then all of a sudden was gone - don't remember when - it was just gone

I really don't know how i managed the first 2 nights

i know it was awful

i was sleeping like a baby within 3 weeks :)

easier said than done, but hang in there :)

good luck

sweet dreams

kathy

OMG. I need to sleep on my side !!

, I didn't know that this was a thing !!

Oh, it's a thing! :) Tight incisions, overall soreness, and gravity will remind you to stay on your back. At one point you'll be able to ease over to your side - a body pillow can help.

It was a couple of weeks for me. I slept in a recliner until I could sleep on my side and that helped because I'm not a back sleeper.

I started about 5 days out. However, I did have to sleep with my pillow wedged a little under side to keep me turning to far. I can sleep on right side much better than left. I can lay on right for about 20 minutes or so with pillow but not comfortable.

I can lay on my stomach with very little discomfort. I didn't know it was a thing either. I am still in the hospital. What bothers me is gas and diarrhea. And I am ready to go home. Waiting on the doctor.

I'm a little over three weeks post and I'm now able to sleep on either side.

However, I've noticed that my hips hurt after sleeping or lying on a side for too long, so I still lie on my back as well.

I think I was able to lie on my sides for short periods of time about two weeks post.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
