Hello everyone.

I have been on the waiting list in Canada for a year now. I have followed the surgeons orders to lose 10% of my bodyweight as well as undergoing a bucket list of tests.

My bloodwork, upper G I and ultrasound have all come back with great result... except for my sleep oxemitry test.

I now have to see a Respiratory specialist. I'm scared and bummed. The thought if sleep apnea scares me.

I was wondering for those of you diagnosed or on the edge of sleep apnea, how did that change your surgery both before and after?

Was there any special preparations on your part that you had to do?

Thanks Sheena :)

I have sleep apnea and it is one of my health issues that allowed me to have the surgery. It isn't a problem for the sleeve. You are asked to bring your machine and mask to the hospital. I was bummed out when I found I had sleep apnea but now love my machine and find out I sleep so much better with it.

I found out that I have mild sleep apnea due to the required pre-op tests. both my surgeon and primary doctor feel that it isnt bad enough for a cpap and losing weight should make it disappear. I was worried about this also and it ended up not being a big deal (didn't affect scheduling surgery)

Can you use your machine after surgery or is there some time when you can't use it post op?

You use it right away. I was on oxygen for a while and while on oxygen they would pump it through the machine.

Yep, you use it EVERY sleep, and night and at naptime. You'll even take YOUR machine to the hospital!

Is sleep Apnea one of those things that with enough weight loss you will be 'cured'?

Are the machines expensive? And are they loud? Does your partner have trouble sleeping when it's on?

Can you get comfortable with one of those things on your face? They seem so restricting.

Thanks so much, Sheena :)

As far as being cured with weight loss - I think it depends. If it's solely weight related it should go away. I believe mine has. Three months after surgery I started having trouble sleeping with my CPAP. My primary doctor told me to stop using it until I get another titration done as he thinks it no longer benefits me. My 6 month surgical follow up appointment is next week and I am going to ask for one. My machine is very quiet. My husband said he never heard it. As far as comfort goes - they fit a mask specifically for you so it's neither too tight or loose. It didn't bother me, but I know it does others. The trade off is usually much better sleep. I slept great with mine for months! Best of luck to you!

I just got a Cpap. It is very quiet and not as uncomfortable as I feared. My dr said after I lose about a third of the weight he will check the pressure and start weening me off.

It takes a while to get used to the CPAP. I had a hard time at first but now love the restful sleep I get with it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
