I have read in other threads that some people do enemas the night before surgery and this is suppose to relieve gas after the surgery. Is this in fact true??

I think the idea is that you can get constipated after surgery, so it's best to get a "running" start, if you see what I mean. Some people do it with laxatives, I guess the doctors of people on the other threads prefer the more direct approach.

My surgeon didnt require an enema before surgery. I think that is one of those individual things that some may want done and others dont.

I was banded 4 days ago. I asked my surgeon why he required a 'bowel cleansing' before surgery and he said it is b/c the bowel sits on the stomache. During surgery, they want the bowel empty so it isn't hard to move and work around.

Someone on here, I can't remember who swears an enema after surgery will help with the gas and cramping. The gas I had was in my shoulder not my bowels so I don't think this would have helped me. I lived on gas-x and walked as much as I could. It was only a few days of discomfort. ~Mandy

Hi,

I'm new in town. I go to the doctor to see if I can get banded on 3-14.

My weight is 265 5'7 I have had bad back for ten years I had both knees worked on. I tried to get this done before two years ago but I was just under the guide lines. Now I put some more weight on. Wish me luck. Hope everything works out for everyone:clap2:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
