Low Bmi And Weight Loss After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all!!

I'm a pre-sleever with a low BMI (35.6). For those that did the surgery with a low BMI, how much weight did you lose during the first month? And how long did it take you to reach your GW?

Thanks,

GG

I was told by my surgeon that with a 35 bmi, I can expect to lose 95-100% of excess weight in about 6 months.

ETA: He said that lower bmi usually means a better than average outcome in terms of weight loss. Thus, the higher percentage of weight lost than "average" for the surgery.

You just made my day! You know, this was a question that I had every intention on asking when I saw my surgeon but with my nerves and anxiety, it completely slipped my mind. Have you had your surgery yet? If not, when is your date?

I know, when he said that I was like "where do I sign?".

No surgery yet, I am in the midst of completing insurance reqs but am looking at a February surgery.

I also read a medical paper online that backed up what he said about better outcomes with lower bmi.

Do you have your date yet?

Yes, I'm scheduled for December 18th (but I'm self-pay) which is economically really tough but I've been over weight since I was a child and I just want to do this!!! Its all I think about!!

Actually, it's a lot more difficult for low BMI'ers to lose than higher. The fact is.. The closer you are to the goal the slower and harder it is to lose. I know for a fact... It's been a year for me, but I'm ok because it's not a race for me. It's a life changing stage

That may be true, I can't say from experience.

I will say that my impression during the conversation was that the doc was talking about overall, final outcome, statistically speaking, and not necessarily about speed as much.

I am not worried about it being fast either. I am just hoping for successful and lasting!

I started with a bmi of 28 (band revision) and lost 14 lbs the first month. Since then (4 mths post op) I've lost a total of 22 lbs. While that doesn't look like alot, I've lost 50% of my excess weight in 4 mths, which is fabulous.

I knew it would come off slower, since I started out much lower. And those last 22 r definitely the hardest!

Good luck to u

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
